Hello everybody: Just getting into swaging and have tons of questions. Most have been answered in this forum. What a great resource! I'd sure appreciate your thoughts on the following:
1. I've got Herters dies (all the sizes they made, I think). Can the 38 dies be used for 9mm Luger?
2. I've got access to several Herters Presses. Which one would be best for swaging?
3. I hope to use 22cal jackets formed from 22 rim fire cases. I'd like to make a light bullet for the Hornet. Will the cases need to be trimmed to length?
4. The Herters dies state they are for half and three quarter jackets. Is there leeway here: can I run the jacket further than 3/4's?
5. Anyone have a good design for making a good wire cutter?

Thanks much for any help you guys can provide

I have a Corbin wire cutter and all his swaging books. Are you interested? If yes i will put a price on them. As always trades welcome.

I have a design that uses a piece of angle iron ans a piece of key stock or flat bar.

I suspect not. The bullets have different diameters. 9mm = 0.356 nominal and .38 spl. = 0.357" nomimal.
But....if you swage lead bullets, as opposed to jacketed bullets, the .357 size might work OK for the 9mm. With a jacket on, I'd expect the extra 0.001" might cause pressure/chambering problems.
Maybe others will have another take on this.

I use .22 short fired cases for Hornet bullets, the finished bullet weighs 40 to 45 grains, depending on the amount of exposed lead on the nose.

I made my own core cutter from nothing more than a piece of 3/16" strap (the cutter) and a section of angle iron (the holding/metering devise).

Lots of 9mm's have bores of .357+

Probably so. I am always amazed at how much variation one can find.
There are probably lots of 9mm's that have bores of 0.355".
What do you think, though, about the OP's question? Can he use (should he) the .38 dies to make bullets for a 9mm?
I reckon that the bottom line question is "Can (should) one shoot bullets intended for a .38/.357 in a 9mm pistol?"

A thousanth or so won't make a big difference in the barrel. You just need to make sure that when you load them they don't bulge the case so you have chambering issues.
