ive reported here before about a load i stummbled on ( with a little help from ken waters pet loads), ive shot this load again (rested@ 25 yards) and, hot damn!, dont it shoot! 9 shots into 1 inch,(1 shot pulled out to the left). I dumped the load on the scale just to check, and it is 7.3 grains of red dot and the 452460 bullet. This 45 is probaly my most accurate handgun right now!Been struggling with 2 inch groups with the heavy weights, and since ive found this load, ive shot nothig else. 1020 f.p.s. average. Thought i ought to share this and see what others have to say............? thanks,, BTW, felix lube, win case and win standard large pistol primer.

now thats some good shootin
the load that I have been shooting in my 45 colts is 8.5gr of unique 255gr cast storebought it will keep 6 rounds at 1.5" at 50 yds in both of my 45s [bisley 5.5" and redhawk 7.5"] thats off a rest if I do my part :Fire:

............Very nice there Maniac. Ain't it just grand when something comes together? Dean Grennell was a lover of pistols and he said (I think it was) Mike Venturino had badgered him into swapping whatever he'd been using in his 45's for Red Dot. I don't remember if it was 45 Colt or 45 ACP :-(

Bisley45 is doing some stuff to. Inchanahalf at 50 yards! Dang.

Scoped?

I can generally see the target at 50 if someone points it out to me.

Good goin' there! Every gun's an individual, but FWIW, a buddy was shooting 6.5-6.7 Red Dot with the 250's (Hornady swaged RNFP's) and was getting 1.5" avg. at 25. He switched to a CCI std. LP primer one day when he ran out of WLP's, and lo an' behold, he couldn't MAKE th' thang shoot over 1" with that load! Tried the CCI's with the 200 gr. RNFP Hornady's, and did almost as well - and about the same load as your's IIRC - and all with nothing but a primer switch! I don't think this kinda' thing is common, but it's not too rare, either. Just shows to go ya' that continued experimentation, even when it's just an accident, can make a difference.

I was trying out the group buy mold 453 275 with 6 and 7.5 grains of Red Dot. Just for fun I used some 452460 for a "control" The 453460 shoots better in my 45 colt every time. Might use that load for silly wets because it shouldn't have so much drop at 100 yards. Less recoil, flatter shooting. Once it warms up outside I am going to try it agin at 100 yards to see which one shoots better there.

Last month I was trying out the BD45CM 225 grain in the same gun. It keeps telling me "I like the 452460."

My favorite load for the 45 LC is the RCBS 255 SWC over 9.0 grs of Unique. This is just a tad high for a Colt as the manuals don't seem to load Unique over 8 to 8.5 with that bullet weight. My long barrel Smith Model 25 shoots it pretty good to say the least. I have a group from 65 yards shot with me sitting up against the house and resting the gun off my knees. I'll post it sometime.

9 grains of unique over a 452424 255 gr boolit gives me 900 Fps which is just right for silly wet.

That's bout what it gives me over my chrono too. It also shoots really great out of both my Winnie 94 Trapper and my Marlin Cowboy. When I lived in Pa I made my friends laugh that I was shooting groundhog with that load and the Winnie and at some distance too. One shot kills for sure.

Ive shot pounds of 452424,s... and some 270-300 grainers,,, this gun always shot about 2 inches as the best.(i was thinking that 2 inches was all i could hold for@25 yards,, until i started shooting this load. I can just amagine what this load would do,with a good pistol shooter. I dont think ill ever get a handgun shooting good consistanty, and i refuse to scope it.

WITH a scope, This smith will shoot 4 to 6" at 100 yards. I took the scope off years ago because it ruins the gun for carrying. I know it will shoot that well, but not with me behind the iron sites. I really enjoy the 45 colt. Big enough boolit and easy to shoot. It doesn't hurt that I had an awesome action job on it when first purchased in 1991. It has lazer engraved on the side "Model of 1989" Musta been gun of the month from Smith. Its also has a flat black unfluted cylinder.
