View Full Version : RCBS 257-120-SP and the .25-06

I was wondering if RCBS 257-120-SP is a good fit for a .25-06 with a 10" twist. First of all, assuming a SAAMI chamber, are both the lube grooves contained in the case neck? Second, has anyone really put the "pedal to the metal" with this little boolit and been rewarded with really high performance or just medeocre accuracy at about 2200 fps? I've been playing with QuickLoad and it looks like 2700 fps can be approached at less than 40K PSI.

Also, can Lyman 257420 be used as a plinker in the .25-06? I'm thinking about buying my first sub .30 caliber cast bullet gun and am also wondering how difficult it is to cast "perfect" .25 caliber bullets.

Size it to .251 patch it back up with 16# paper and hotrod it all you want!

I am planning on trying that on my -06 one day.
Rolling the .30cal is getting boring.
Time to go down a notch.

I can do that, but I also want high performance with lubed bullets (RCBS 257-120-SP and maybe even SAECO 257).

So, tell us about your experiences with patched .25-06 rounds.

Thanks,
MJ

I just found this thread, and couldnt be happier!! I just got a savage 110 hvy bbl in 25-06, and am having a hell of a time finding anyone with info on using cast boolits! I have been having great success with J-words, but just hate buying those damn copper jacketed things! I was looking at the .257-120-sp with a gas check... but dont know a thing about paper patching...

I'm watching this thread, but suspect the twist will dictate velocity. My 700 Mountain Rifle in 25-06 sits in the safe most of the time.

I don't have a 25-06 yet, but I have been playing with cast in my .257 Roberts some. The heaviest boolit I have so far is the 88 gr. Lyman 257312. I've also been shooting the 257420. There certainly isn't any problem pouring good boolits this size, and I find overall quality as good, or better than out of the .30 cal molds I have. Accuracy has been good too, but I haven't pushed the velocity envelope much yet. I've had a lot of fun with 7-8 grains of both Titegroup, and Red Dot behind both boolits with groups well under an inch at 50 yards out of my Ruger 77MKII Ultra Light. Using 18 grains of IMR 4227 behind the 257312 has aslo worked out well.

If it helps you out any, mine casts very nice with straight WW

128gr with gas check
1.023 OAL nose to tail with gas check
.370 from base of gas check to top of top lube groove

I bought this for my 257Rbts but it wont shoot, cause of my 1/14 twist I'm assuming. I figured I'd just use it for my brothers and Dads 25-06's so I decided to keep the mold anyway.

That bullet works very well in my 1-10 twist Roberts. Have it HP'd for areal treat./beagle

Keep in mind there is a 25 Cal "Heavy" Group Buy going on right now, what's more you can get it in any combination of 85, 100 and 120 grains, and up to one Hollow Point as well.

I signed up for when I get around to my 257RAI.

reloader try speeding that 1-14 up.
2200+ or so to start should do it.
<---- always looking for slow twist bbls.

Thanks Run, I'll give it a try.

Going slower the boolits were hitting the 50yd target in 16" patterns and smacking sideways.

I shot some 258418's in my 1-12 twist 25/303 today to fireform some shells,I loaded them over 10grns of Trail Boss and every one of them keyholed. Pat
