View Full Version : Boolits for a .50?

I just got an LAR Grizzly and I'm wondering if there is any way to shoot cast through it:confused:

The guy gave me 27 live, full power rounds and I can order some more but I would rather save my $$$ for reloading supplies.

I will order some normal jacketed bullets and BMG powder for the 1,000 yard range but it would be nice if I could find a reduced power load for the 200 yard range I shoot at more often.

Could I harm anything if I just filled the case full of trail boss and used a .50-70 type plain base boolit?

CBE make a .50 BMG mould.

You need to generate enough recoil to operate the action so you need to use good reloading data. The Grizzly has an advantage over the Desert Eagle, no gas system to foul up with cast loads. 50-70 molds will drop bullets around .511 to .515, you need a mold that will come out at the proper .499 to .500. A custom mold will be in order.

What about using a great plains or maxi ball mould for the .50? It would be along the lines of a big bore soup can mould. Just a thought.:coffee:

He's talking about a .50 BMG here, not the .50 Grizzly pistol. Just so we don't share any erroneous info. Fwiw, Trailboss can get nasty if overloaded. I definately wouldn't START with a caseful. It's bulky, but still a fast burner.

Yes .50 BMG with a .511 bore (perhaps .512-513 cast bullets?)

I have a .50BMG rifle that has not been shot in a long time because of costs.
I have seriously thought that a boolit on top of a case of black powder might be interesting.
I don't know if a smokeless powder load could be found that would give low enough velocity to work with boolits.
The case holds somewhere around 220 grs. of powder.

a 50 BMG is going to be more in teh 600+ grain category than some of the other bullets mentioned here. something like this

you can also buy pulldown surplus from here

http://www.hi-techammo.com/

thats about as cheap as casting lead.

The guy that owns Widner's is a 50BMG nut and stocks almost anything you want. Still, shooting a 50 ain't going to be cheap! I WOULD like to use one on a few red light cameras though.
