I recently made some 30 cal. boolits from #2 alloy,when they was made I ran my furnace between 680 and 700 degrees and droped the boolits out of the mold into a bucket of ice water.The boolit is the Lyman 311299 and I am going to be runing it in a 30-06 between 2100-2200 FPS.As for my question I will be hunting whitetail deer with the 311299 and i was wonding what the WQed boolit would do at that speed on a whitetail.Will it blow up upon impact or will it act like a FMJ
and just poke a hole thru.Also would ACWW be better at that speed for hunting?

I can't say what the '06 bullet would do, but I have some water quenched #2 alloy 90gr 9mm boolits that act pretty much like FMJ and some 147gr FP that do the same except the nose of the bullet squashes flat and spreads out a bit.

Same bullet in my 308 shot thru 4 one gallon jugs of water acted like a FMJ, no expansion. I now use an alloy of 66% lead and 33% WW. water dropped and aged 2 weeks.

Will ACWW or AC Lyman #2 take 2200 fps provideing everything is fit proper and the right lube without leading?

I don't have a lot of experience with Lead-moderate Tin-a bit of Antimony alloy bullets, water quenched, but here goes. I've shot two with such bullets, Lyman 311291GC, launched about 2200 fps from a .30-'06. I was not trying to hit bone, I was trying for both lungs. I did hit ribs, but there were not bone arrows. I remember the lungs on one were nicely centered, but not severely damaged, the bullet seeming to change direction about 15 degrees and be yawing a bit on exit. The exit wound in the skin was about .30 by about .45.

I did not find any fragments of the bullet in the deer.

If you shot the pelvis, a shoulder or spine, you might find different results.

By interpolation from my tests, I would expect maximum-quenched Lyman #5 (that is, 5/5 alloy) to be 23 BHN. Toughness should be 8-9 Joules by my test method, which means it is very tough. Ductility won't be wonderful, but at least it won't break without bending a little first. Essentially, this is an inferior alloy compared with something a bit lower in both tin and antimony content, but compared with even the best possible low tin alloy it scores very well in toughness. (The optimum low tin alloy, fully hardened, only achieves 4.9 Joules and is even less ductile than your 5/5.) Realistically my only valid criticism of 5/5 is that it wastes a little bit of tin and antimony, and it is an expensive alloy. FWIW 4/4 is tougher, more ductile, slightly cheaper, and reaches the same maximum hardness.

I have done this with many rifles. Cartridges have been 30/30, .308, 35Rem, 444Marlin, 450marlin, and 45/70. The right lube for me has been Thompson Blue Angel.

first id recomend you save your #2 and if your going to water quench use ww with about 2 percent tin added. It will come out just as hard or at least close enough. Water quenched bullets will fracture even at handgun velocitys but usually only if your using a bullet with a sharp nose to driving band transistion like a swc. Ive seen many of them loose there nose in penetration testing but it rarely happens to a bullet like a lfn.

leadhead 500, Why don,t you try your bullets in wet news paper?
I find this test verry usefull.:brokenima
