Nebraska today and went past a gunshop in Hastings that I had never been in before. I immediately went around the block, parked, and went inside. It was small, but had a little bit of everything. I checked out everything he had and nearly had a heart attack when I ran across a box of 1,000 Hornady .30cal gas checks. I picked it up, turned it over and saw the price. $42.95. Yikes!

I guess the store owner hasn't gotten the word that metals prices are softening.

Was his/her other merchandise similarly/predatorily priced?

The rest of his stock was mildly high, but not outrageous. I would expect a small shop like that would be higher than one of the mail-order houses, but the gas checks were way out there on their own. The thing is that the high cost was not because of shipping. Hornady is right down the road approx 25 miles from this shop (I visited there, too).

I went to bass pro last weekend and their primers were 4.99 a box of 100 and they don't give a discount of buying a brick of 1000. These were just ordinary primers too, not bench or anything special. I think their cheap ones were 4.49 a box.

A guy at the gun show in Hickory has a box of 44 GC for $40, he's been hauling them around for several years. I thought maybe he was charging for mileage.

With the conversion rate on our dollar that's about what we are paying down here. Which is exactly why I have one of Charlies "Freechex" devices. Up yours Hornady!!!

Not gas checks, but my Brother and I went into the recycle place a couple of days ago looking for a piece of flat bar steel. They were out of what we wanted, but to salvage a trip I asked what they wanted for their wheel weights.

The guy didn't even bat an eyelash when he said "$1.35 a pound." I had to work hard to keep it civil after that.

We left with an empty truck, just like when we arrived.[smilie=1:
