bisley45--What bullet and weight would I use for hunting deer with a 45 colt? I would want something with very long range if I encountered a deer so armed.

Bisley 45,

Deer aren't too picky about .45 bullets that hit them in vital places. I've used 255 to 350 grains and 720 to 1200 fps. In my opinion you've already made a good choice by starting with .45 Colt. I'd use a wide meplat of over .250. Then I would recommend that you use whatever you have or can get the most of and practice as much as you can. Reliable bullet placement is the key, so velocity and load will be whatever works good in your gun. You might start with the LEE 255 RFN and some AA#7.

I have a RCBS 45-270SAA mold that I am delighted with. Over 10.0 grains of Unique it is serious Bambi medicine. I load the Lee C452-300 over a heaping helping of WC820 (older lot) and plan to take this on a hog hunt in the near future.
