View Full Version : Varmint boolit for .30-30?

I have a Savage 24F in .30-30/12gauge. I was thinking it might make a good coyote calling gun as the shots here rarely exceed 150yds and are often scattergun close. Does anyone have any experience with the Lee C309-113F? Or any other lighter boolits in the .30-30? Since I'm loading single shot for the rifle, I can use pointed boolits if I want.

Thanks for the help!

Its a great boolit. I have used it @ 100 yards with the 308 at around 1800 fps. I have not pushed it hard enough for coyotes. It had a lot of drop @ 200 yards as in set the vertical hair in the scope at the bottom of the scope for a 200 yard plate. I would look at a heavier bullet because it will retain momentum better at 150 yards and you should not be relying on expansion with a 30 cal on a coyote.

i would think you would want a yote boolit to break up like a varmint flgc??

I've shot numerous coyotes with 311316 and 313631 out of my M1 Carbine at 1850 and 1950 fps respectively. Works fine and kills ole 'yote dead. I haven't shot any 'yotes with 311316 (very similar to the Lee bullet in question) but I have shot a passle of jack rabbits with that bullet loaded to 1800 fps out of M94 30-30s. I suspect it will do fine on 'yotes. Just remember; don't just shoot at the coyote, shoot at the heart/lung area. Might want to try it. I was using Unique BTW.

I found a 1 3/8 load of #2 shot or BB shot to be the best 12 ga FC medicine for coyotes out to 50 yards.

Sweet rifle, that 24. I like the older ones before they went all clunky and with the matte finish.

I've used the 311316 on coyotes out of a 32-20 rifle at 1500ish fps. As long as you get a good heart/lung shot they'll usually drop right there. The shoulder works too, but on smaller dogs the boolit will go through and bone can cause some pretty fair rips. My shooting has all been inside 100 yards, most under 75. In a 30-30 with the similar Lee Soup Can you mentioned you should be able to up the speed a little and get a good 100-125 yard load. That would be about my limit as the wind will push the light boolit around pretty good. A 130-150 gr boolit might work better at longer range, but you'll get complete penetration for sure so that means more holes, more sewing and more concern for the background.

If you decide to go with a heavier boolit, Ranch Dog here on the forum, (ad on bottom of [page), sells a Lee 2 cav pretty cheap that casts with a very wide Meplat. Should be a good deer boolit if you were so inclined also.

I have shot this out of my 06 with Red Dot and fill at 15-1700 FPS. At 100 yards it will blow a water filled gallon jug to shreds. Since We gave my Savage 340 to a young hunter, for his first deer rifle, the only 30-30 I have left is a 16" barreled Trapper Carbine. If I use it as a 2 shooter I guess I could try them in it too.

As for a Varmint load for the 12 gage look at Heavy Shot. That in BB or #1's puts Yip Dogs down, NOW !!!

My 24 is a collection of parts that I put together years ago, in 20 gage/22LR.

I shoot Quick Shock 22 Ammo out of the LR bbl and #4 buck out of the 20 gage. No Run off's yet but I call them in close before I use this combo. (50 yards or less).

Good Hunting, clean out those Yodel Dogs.

I've used the Lee 113gr bullet, but only at targets. It's done pretty well at 100yd with 27 gr of wc845, which is somewhere near 4895 speed. Not a match winner but respectable hunting accuracy around 2" at 100yd.

Thanks, guys! Anyone know where I can pick up some of these boolits to try? I'm not casting for .30 cal (yet) and would like to know I'm going to have something usable before buying the molds, GCs, sizing die, etc. BTW For those who care- I found my favorite .480 load and just posted it on the Loads forum

This is a cool site! Thanks to veryone for their help and patience with the new guy!
