February '09 Guns and Ammo has an article on a new prototype rifle and cartridge...the 338 Marlin express. Just what we need, a new cartridge to cast for.

I don't even want to hear about a new cartridge.

Well, look at the bright side. It's not a belted magnum!

here is what you do:go get a 308 marlin neck it up to 338 so you can shoot a shorter same weight boolit. buy a bbl and have it reamed with the 308 case reamer and a 338 neck.
and be the first kid on your block to have at it.
i must have a hard time typing sarcasm

Nope The parent catridge has been shortened and a rim added . I have read an article about the 338 but I cannot remember the parent case but it is not a 308 necked up.

Ever since the 25-20 WCF folks have been trying to make lever action rifles long range rifles! This is just another attempt of the latest round of them. I like them for what they are, quick, powerful short range rifles.

I'm still waiting for a Heeled .433 bullet on a .22 WMR case...

The parent case is the .376 Steyr shortened, semi-rimmed, and necked down.

What do you suppose folks do with all of these expensive guns after the flash-in-the-pan calibers are discontinued?

I don't consider any of the modern cals in the 99 Savage a short range round. The 243win, 308win, 284win, 7mm08rem, 22-250, and the 250-3000 are not short rang rounds. The 99 Savage is a modern marvel decades ahead of it's time. I don't know if they still make them, as I haven't seen any new Mod 99's in years. The last production run that I saw was in the mid 90's and only in the 308 and 243.

As far as the rest of the lever guns I would agree. 150 yards, maybe 200 max. I don't think this new Marlin is going to get any bigger following than that 450 they came up with a few years back. I heard them bragged up in the gun periodicals, but have yet to see one of these fine outstanding feats of engineering, or talked to anyone that owns one. Could be because I don't get out that much, but I do get around the ranges and the gun shops.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

why doesn't someone just come out with a .348 win?
and quit trying to duplicate it with everything but a 348.
