If I were to judge the health of our beloved country by what goes on in Kalifornia or NY I would be terribly dismayed. Likewise if I listen to Teddy Kennedy or Charles Schumer. However, a trip to the heartland buoys my spirits considerably.
This weekend the bride and I drove to Farmington, MO, for a recital that three grand kids were in. The event began with everyone rising to a beautiful solo of the Star Spangled Banner. The program had on the last page "Thank you for coming and God Bless America". American flags were flown all over the place.
On our way there we had lunch at a little corner restaurant in St. James, MO. Right next door to a flag shop. So, we browsed. I bought a new flag pole and some other odds and ends. I bought a cap for a good friend who is a VN vet. The owner asked if I was in VN. No I said, I was a cold war vet. That got me a handshake, a "thank you", and a 10% discount on everything.
So stay alert. I guess it would be dangerous to ignore what happens on either coast, though I would sure like to. Keep the faith as small town America is still healthy and has their head screwed on right. FWIW.
