I'm casting some 30-30 out of my RCBS 30-150 and the metal is from some typeset that I picked up. They weigh in at 142 grains and have a light purple tint to them. I cast some WW in this mold the other day and had no problems. I have cast other linotype and have never seen this. Any idea what is causing this? could there be nickel in the typeset?

Probably pure lead, way too soft for 30-30 I think.

If it was pure lead, the boolits would weigh more than 150 grs. It's not unusual to see some purple tint on linotype.

Sometimes, I get a beautiful purple/blue colour. They cast well, I paper patch, so they shoot well.
I have some kind of alloy that was called lead when I got it, that is too hard. I have to crank up the heat also. When I get that purple/blue, I drop some of that in.
I get some really good looking castings with good fill out, easy sizing, and good shooting.
I never weighed them. I just wrap and shoot them.

Well, I feel retarded now. Makes sense that things lighter than lead mixed in will make it lighter. I was reading about the color and not seeing the rest of the post.

fallout,
Don't feel retarded....... or maybe I should too. Sometimes I do the same thing.

I hate those purple bullets because they just don't look right with yellow brass cases.
But they might be kinda spiffy with the nickle-plated stuff...
