can't find my bnh tester and want to slug a barrel. i have some lead roof flashing that i melted down. don't have any pure lead. was wondering if anyone knows if the flashing is soft enough to slug the barrel?

Use the FHT.


Fingernail Hardness Tester. If you can carve a chunk out of it with your fingernail it's soft:drinks:

Use the ring,ding,tink,thud test. Drop comparable( WWvs your flashing) ingots on concrete and you'll be able to distinguish the difference. I do it all the time......

keep in mind lead alloy ingots don't show their full hardness for a couple weeks maybe more. Of course this depends on your hearing, all the more reason to wear hearing protection when shooting. I have good selective hearing my wife says.

Roof flashing is essentually plumbers lead and it is very soft and close to pure. When you melt it down and it sits a little while it should get a purple or blueish tint on top of the melt showing you it is close to pure. Even WW metal will slug a barrel. It's not as good as soft lead but will work in a pinch.
