Got out to the range today with my 45-70 to try a variation on my favorite load.
With the colder weather I have noticed my accuracy deteriorate slightly and I have thought it might be the boolit lube being too hard. I have been using White Label's BAC. A friend had given me his recipe some time back and since he was kind enough to share it I won't repeat it here other than to say it is based on beeswax.

Right off I will admit to a few fliers today but they were only an inch or two out.
At 100 yards. I shot several 5 shot groups without fliers that measured around an inch. Not bad but I am still looking for an honest one hole group and I have shot 3/4 inch groups with this load and BAC lube over the summer.

With some ammo left I decided to try 200 yards, after shooting a couple of sighters I took off a inch on the scope (2 inches at 200 yards) and proceded to put 5 shots touching each other in a horizontal string that measured 1-1/4 inches center to center. Not believing what I saw I raised the scope setting 4 inches and shot another 5 shot group that was more circular and measured 1 inch center to center.

I had been looking for groups of 2 inches or so and was very surprised at these last two groups, I can only conclude that the boolits aren't stabilized yet at 100 yards.

I hope to be so fortunate.

Can you post some load information such as boolit, powder etc. I love shooting my 45-70's

Hi zampilot and Doc Highwall,

These results were with the new boolit lube and quite successful.

The load is cast from a 535 gr. Steve Brooks Origional Postell mould with approximently 20:1 alloy over a .060 vegetable fiber wad over 39.0 gr. IMR 3031
lit by CCI BR2 primers in Remington cases. As I said the lube is beeswax with a cople of other things.

What you are seeing is not uncommon. The postel tends to stabilize beyond 100yds at typical 45-70 velocities. Many that shoot 45-70 do not even fool with 100yds except for a sight setting. Nice rifle there.

I have heard that before, it's hard to believe. I just joined a club with a 300 yard
range so more testing is in order.

Thanks,

Yes it is a DeHass design, an FDH#2, it's the same as the rifle in the picture a few replies back.

How do you put a price on your own work? I can tell you this, I did all the metal work including installing and chambering the barrel. I did the final polish on the metal work before sending it all out for blueing and stock making. The blueing and stock making were done by the same person in 1989. I paid $1000 for the blue and stock on each rifle back then so who knows what it would be now.
Earlier this year I decided to replace the barrel with a slower twist and since I long ago sold my machine shop I had to send this work out. After shipping the MacGowen barrel I wanted to a gunsmith the total cost for the barrel, instillation, chambering, and blueing was around $750. So you can see that building it yourself is not an inexpensive proposition, I fact I have built a lot of custom items, not just guns, over the years and other than having something unique with bragging rights it's always cheaper to buy a factory item.
