For those that shoot lead out of your AR15:

What is your range. Is it accurate at 300 - 400 - 500 yds

What mold?

What recipe?

Any lead problems with the gas tube or other finicky workings of the AR?

thanks

I wouldn't want to have to clean the gas system out. If I were to load up some I would use a slow pistol powder or uber fast rifle powder so you got full pressure but keep the velocity low. The lyman manual has some loads for cast 223's.

Powder Valley has 1k Hornady 55gr FMJ for 70 bucks.

The Lyman 225462 over H4895 with a dacron filler gave good performance out to 200 yards with a velocity of 2000 fps. AR/M16s this was used in had 12" twists. I'd try 17-20 gr in 1 gr increments in a 9" twist as 19 gr worked well in a 10" twist Mini14 I had back then also. The actions of the ARs and Mini14 functioned fine and I had no problems with the gas system in any of the AR/M16s or in the Mini14. I was using Hornady GCs and Javelina lube (may have been Tamerack 50/50 back then, same as Javelina).

If I was loading cast for a 7.5" twist AR I'd try for a 75-80 gr GC'd bullet and 4895 or a slower powder. I'd also try to get functioning and some semblance of accuracy (3 moa if the AR was a 1.5 moa or better rifle with quality jacketed bullets) between 1600 & 1800 fps.

Theory has it that leading is more of a pressure issue above 25,000psi. I would try to find a load under 25,000psi with the correct pressure curve and burn rate powder.Lee 2nd editon has some .223 pistol loads that might work. You should be able to get away with 1600-1700 easy and 2200tops. Maybe even 2500 with gas checks and everything perfect. I am going to try some cast out of my chrome lined 1/7twist barrel to take advantage of the heavier, longer bullets that tumble and fragment at slower speeds. There was one page were a guy had tried 5 or 6 different .223 molds.

I'll add to the question; Is there any problem with gas checks, lead, fillers Vs. comps,or flash supressors. Do you run a risk of ruining your FS or comps.. real or fake.

In a 223 I don't know, but comps and brakes in a 308 there is no problem if things are working right(no barrel leading). I have used lead over 3 different flash hiders, and 2 brakes in my FALs. If you are leading your barrel, you will leave a layer of lead wash on your muzzle device. If the bore is clear, the brake will be also.
