I was reading an old article on .500 (black powder) Express rifles by Ross Seyfried last night and amongst the tools supplied with one of his rifles was a "side pour bullet mould", no picture but apparently the intention was to cast bullets that had both a hollow base and a hollow nose. Has anyone got more information on these moulds? My curiosity is peaked even four search engines have failed to throw up any meaningful results.

The only problem that I see is figuring out how to make the sprue cut disappear from the bearing band area of the boolits.

From my understanding, side pour moulds were sometimes made and used in the 19th Century. The main disadvantage is that the sprue would have to be clipped off of the cast bullet and then the bullet run thru a sizer to remove the last remmants of the sprue.
I know of no mould manufacturer that now makes side pour moulds, so the design is now rather obsolete.
