View Full Version : Catshooter/45 2.1s Group buy for a .30 120 Carbine mould is here.

Catshooter
12-01-2008, 10:13 AM
This group buy is for a 45 2.1 designed .30 120 grain round nosed six cavitiy Lee mould. This is a re-run. The original buy spec'ed the mould out at .311 and they came in at .312 which has worked well. So we'll do it again, without any alterations. 45 2.1 will be along shortly to post a pic. As per usual, 45 2.1's design allows you to size the boolit down nicley to fit your peice if needed.

This boolit is targeted toward the .30 carbine and the original buy has worked well in them. It would of course work in many other .30s as well.

Pricing: the interst thread showed some good interest, but I'm not sure we'll hit the magic 25. So let's start at $65 in case we hit 25. (If we do, Lee waives the $100 set-up fee for custom moulds for those who don't know.) If we don't make 25, I'll adjust the cost accordingly. Personal checks are fine.

To get in the buy, click on my user name and Private Message me for my address. Or if you have questions, either post 'em here or PM me, I'll be happy to help.

For you old hands; my address has changed and my mail is not forwarded. I've retired! PM me.

Important note: I'm running more than one buy so please send me your contact data with your payment, also please tell me which mould you want. Please also give me your screen name so I can contact you via the board.

These buys can take a year, sometimes even more, so you have to be willing to wait.

I hold all the money until I send the order into Lee, then I deposit. This isn't a money making venture, it's a group buy. Usually what I do if there is any money left over is send it to this site.

Once the moulds arrive, I will open one, do a test pour to see how they look, and weigh and measure just like I always have done. If they're good, I'll ship 'em out to y'all. As always, if there is a problem with your individual mould once you get it it's up to you to sort it out with Lee. Lee is not fast with these group buys, but they are getting better about their quality.

Remember: Things can go wrong! These group buys are an effort amoungts us all to get a boolit mould we want, as cheaply as possible. This isn't a profit - making venture, we're all in it together.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Has anyone had experience with this bullet in a 7.62x39? I have a Mini 30 and a M77 All Weather in this chambering.

120gr PB seems a little light for the 7.62x39. I wonder how it stands up to 2300fps velocities. I always though cast bullets should run on the heavy side for best accuracy.

I am in on jim4065's 140gr spitzer, but it is a gas check design. I am thinking with a plane based bullet, I should go a little heavier, say 150-160gr.

How fast can I expect to run a 120gr PB without overdoing things?

RGS,

Doesn't look like anyones stepping up with an answer, so I will.

Nope, I haven't tried it in the x39. I may, (I have a mould from the first buy) and if I do it would be as a plinker, not full bore.

I have read many posts by others and with my own experience that boolits don't need to be on the heavy side for outstanding accuracy.

How fast can you go? That's a technical question, and like many techincal questions the answer is depends. What rifle? How's the bore? What alloy? What hardness? What do you mean by "overdoing things"? :) I think many shooters here are or will be using this boolit at full velocity, esp in the Carbine since it's a semi and it will want that or nearly that to function the action. 1900 fps? Should do well at that speed.

I hope I've helped, though I'm afraid I haven't.

Thanks Catshooter,

By overdoing things I meant raising chamber pressure to the point gas would blow by the unchecked base and lead the bore. This is also a function of lube type and alloy as you said, so I guess there is no definitive answer to my question, at least not without loading them up and shooting them to see what happens.

 My other .30 cal rifle is a 300H&H. That could be way too much of a good thing.:holysheep

We'd all of us love to be able to be able to count on perfect results from any given mould. *Sigh* But there are so many variables we just can't. If funds permit it, what some of us do is purchase moulds that look good, that seem that they might just fulfill some particular role. Then if it doesn't, it will usually sell pretty quickly in the For Sale forum. :)

Sometimes, all you can do is try.

For what its worth, Ken sent me a rather large sampling of the first group buy, and I pushed it to well past 2200 fps in several different rifles with mild-to-severe leading depending on the load. Accuracy ranged from fantastic (30 carbine and 30-30 at 1900 fps) to terrible. Unfortionately, I'm down to my last 10-12 boolits, so I didn't have as much playing around with it as I would like.

What I'm really looking for with this boolit is a fantastic .30 carbine load, and a light, general duty plinker in the bigger .30's. It is very well suited for that (for me anyway), but no one is going to be able to tell anybody else that this design is going to be great for their given rifle/load. I would think that given the time and energy, you can find a usable load for this boolit in your x39 or h&h...but nobody can tell you for sure. I think buying a gb mold is kind of like gambling, you look at the odds and roll the dice. If you are really interested but unsure, I'm sure somebody here would be willing to send you some samples to help you make up your mind.

Anyway, got the MO sent out today...now I just have to try and be patient for the next year or so....

I'd like to get in on this Group Buy too - I'm PM-ing you Catshooter.
You think this'll work in my .30-30 (model 94) too?
I think so.

Buckaroo
02-07-2009, 06:15 PM
Here's a possibly stupid question; I'm looking at the only Lee mold available online, the C309-120-R, which is a gas check round nose 120 gr. double cavity mold $19.95 - Now would it be idiotic to suggest drilling out the gas check part of the mold? Should be pretty easy on a drill press, only need to go in 1/8 inch or so.

Catshooter
02-08-2009, 04:27 PM
That's not idiotic Buckaroo. It also chops 10 months or so of your wait.

The downside is it's a two cavity, not a six. The sixes are much better built, but that doesn't mean they don't work.

Cat

Andy_P
02-08-2009, 04:39 PM
There's another way to remove the gas check. If you have a friend with a mill, you can remove about 0.100" off the top and remove the gas checked portion of the cavity. This method will also reduce the weight of the bullet by about 10%.

I wanted a 230gr plain based 44 cal (0.432") bullet, so I did this to the Ranch Dog 265gr six cavity.

Thanks Cat - and due to the impending gun bans and bullet serializations, and likely mold registration (!) - I'm going to go the quick route. Sorry I can't be more patient.

For thoses who has this mold , what have you shot it out of and how did it group ?? I'm not having very good success with some that were given to me sized .310 and shot out of a 10" 30-20 [32-20} contender, going back Friday to try again

Catshooter, My check is in the mail. Again. Don't ask - I'm such an idiot sometimes... Hope it's not too late.

Wayne, I borrowed one of the original moulds from GarandsRUs and cast up a couple thou in a weekend. I shoot them out of a Ruger Blackhawk and an AMT Automag III. Don't ask me how they group, but it seems to me I hit what I'm aiming at. Sometimes I'm aiming off the paper though.

Ok, everybody that I was waiting for should be in now, so this buy is now closed.

Let the waiting begin! It'll be interesting to see how long this one takes. The .32 Keith was three months, weird.

By the way, I spoke with a nice woman at Lee today. She says they are hiring, part-timers are becoming full time, it's crazy. She told me to expect a wait of at least a year. At least! *sigh*
