Anyone load their 44mag with low end loads using the LEE Oildrum (310 gr) boolit. I see lyman shows it for lighter boolits. I was looking to keep it 1000-1100fps.:drinks:

P.S. I will be launching them from Encore 12" barrel

..................The only similarity here is that I used H4227 in a 45 Colt under some Lee 457-340F's sized down to .452" for use in an old Ruger Vaquero. I couldn't find any load data for a slug that heavy so extrapolated one for 4227. Worked very well and IIRC the velocity was about 880 fps. Wasn't looking for a magnum load, just some accuracy and a clean burn.

19-20 grains should get you there. I like ww primers with it and its a very accurate load in my guns.

Thank a bunch guys. The lyman manual only shows lyman boolits:( They listed loads for 4227 in 44 mag but I wasn't sure how low to start. I thought of 18gr or so to start, but didn't know if there was anything to worry about starting to low(H110 warning ).

I've worked up to 21 grains of IMR-4227 with the Lee in my 1894 Marlin. Never found the accruate load I was looking for, so switched powder.

Loaded up 19gr under lee 310gr.gave great groups @ 25yrds. Extreme spread 40fps, right at 1100fps. (1080-1120) Nice steady push of recoil. And no leading

I have been using 18 grains of 4227 in my 44 Mags with a H&G mold #503 that weighs 250 grains. It was originally listed as being recommended by Elmer keith for the 44 special. It is an accurate load out of two Smiths, both M29's with a 6 inch and 8&3/8" barrel respectively. One can go as high as 23 grains of 4227 if more bang is needed or wanted; that pretty well maxes out what you can do with the powder. I size the bullets to .429 and lube them with NRA 50/50 Alox Beesw. formula and put a moderate roll crimp on the rounds. Accuracy is one hole at 25 yards off the bench and in 2 inches at 50 yards. Good shooting. LLS

What primers? That seems like a pretty high SD. Try CCI LP mag or Fed 155 or if you're there already, try a harder crimp.

WW primers, no crimp, just smooth out the Bell. Seated to just below the 2 crimp grooves.

What would SD be if; rnd1 is 1100fps, rnd2 is 1080fps, rnd3 is 1105fps, rnd4 is 1120fps, rnd5 is1095 ??? Extreme spread is 40fps. average is 1100fps.

SD would be 15. That's more like it.
2 friends and I tested a 44 mag load of 24gr/WW296 powder with a 240gr Sierra JHC for Silhouette shooting. We used the old WW LP mag primers, the newer WW LP (all purpose) primers, Fed 155 LP mag and CCI LP mag (don't remember the number. We got the best accuracy, SD and velocity with the Federal 155 LP mag, second place was the CCI LP mag. The WW LP mag was third and the newer win LP was in last by a considerable margin. The loads were tested out of 2-7 1/2" Ruger SBHawks a 6 1/2" M29-2 Smith and a 10" DW. Since 4227 is a slower powder, though not a ball powder, I would suspect similar results. But I admit we have not tested it.

If you have excel in your computer, enter the velocitys down 1 row. I used A1:A5 and then in another box enter =stdev(A1:A5). That will give you a std deviation of any number of rounds. Just change the last A# to your last entry
