Well just noticed that my 311041 doesn't have a gas check on it. It's weighing in around 157 grains with linotype lead. BNH of 20. I use 3130. Anybody have a good suggestion on what weight to start with? I usually use 30 grains on a 150 grain winchester power point flat nose.

I'll guess that you mean IMR- 3031 ? I've been loading 25grs. with the gas check. Works for me, don't know the mv though. You should be able to go to around 27grs or so at least.

Is it a GC bullet sans the GC? or is it a PB 311041 bullet?

If you are going to drive that bullet above 1400 fps or so, you will need a gas check on it.
If you don't use one, you will simply paint your bbl with lead.

As for powder, I have had great luck with 34.5 grains of H 414. ( ww 760 )That gave me 1.5 in, 3 shot groups at 100 yds. day in and day out, with a velosity of 1900 fps +- 15 fps. That was in my old long bbl Winchester m-64.

I now shoot a carbine model 94 and I have gone to a 200 grain Mountain mould, and 36 gr of the same powder. I have not yet tested this for accuracy or velosity however.

If you are new to cast bullets, you will need air cooled wheel weight metal, and a gas check.
The powders 2400, 3031, 4759 are best. 4895 , 4064 qare ok.. Seat the bullet so it just kisses the rifling if you can, and NEVER seat the bullet so deep that it is exposed to the powder charge.

Bullets cast from Lino are around approx 6% lighter than from WW. I've used Lyman 311291, a gas check bullet that is similar to 311041. It weighs around 170 grains with the gas check. Using IMR 3031 in loadings from 25-30 grains, I found that 27 grains gave me the best grouping from both my 94 rifle and 94 SRC. The bullets were sized at ..309 and lubed with NRA 50/50. I don't have a chrono, but the 27 grains is below the max listed for factory velocities of 2000-2100 fps. The load burned clean and left no leading. LLS

someone mentioned that they thought the gas checks shanks have been removed. that would explain why you can see the screw hole on the top of the mold.

That would also explain why the boolit casts so light..... I would use 7 -8 grains of Unique for a really nice light plinking / target load.

I have used 25 grains of IMR-3031 with the Lyman 311041 gas checked bullet in a Marlin 36-A, 24 inch barrel and got a MV of 1775.
