I am having some strange problems. I just started getting lead that would turn dark brown and finally black on the top in under a minute. What kind of contamination would do that? It is a problem for me since I only have a ladle right now and no bottom pour.

Turn the heat up, flux, skim.
Wait a bit, flux.
It sounds like there is still crud in the melt.

Are you fluxing with beeswax or candle wax? One of the things I have noticed is that if I do not keep my spoon clean of the extra wax that doesn't burn up real well, when I go to stir the pot I get a bit of the wax that melts off the spoon and is somewhat difficult to clean up properly. I usually either clean the spoon then skim, or get a clean spoon and skim. Hope this helps.

I agree still crud in there. Marvel flux works good for that Brownells sells it . sm
