Hi everyone,
I have some pan lubing to do and I want to use different colors to distinguish between what to load up first. What do you use to add color to your lube besides crayons? My kids are all grown up and there isn't a crayon to be found anywhere. I would buy some if I can get a bunch of the same color but this isn't possible. I am assuming that food coloring will not work. I am using felix lube by the way. I am looking forward to hearing any ideas. Thank you.

Dye for candles; small little pieces work wonders.

I know this does not help you now but next time you are in your favorite eatery, ask the hostess to save the kiddie crayons for you. They are usually in 4 packs.

I just use one of those small candles like you buy from walmart. One of the ones that is about 1 1/2 x 1 1/2. Colored my lube perfectly!

Thank you very much for the ideas. I didn't think a candle would work because I thought the color was only on the surface. I was obviously wrong:roll:. I will try the dye and candle method and take it from there. Thanks again.

Sometimes the dye is on the surface of candels and sometimes not but you can tell by giving it a good look over. I just used crayons. If you ahve kids around I'm sure you have some and if not they are cheap and the color is more concentrated than candles. Also I have heard the styric acid in the crayons is good for the lube.

I use candle dye, obtained from a friend who is a candle maker. It is a liquid.

Candle dye is available in many craft stores where they have candle making supplies

Used a red crayon in my pan lube. Turned my lube pink! So it is crisco, beeswax and a red crayon.

I go to the local craft shop and buy the little blocks of candle die. They are concentrated die in a small amount of paraffin. I don't currently use paraffin as a component of any lube, but the little bit of it in the die block gets overwhelmed by the rest of the ingredients, I guess. After this thread, I guess I'll look for the liquid candle die that was mentioned. As for the use of a candle for color, we spend so much time planning the exact ratios of the various waxes and other components in our lube mixes, why would we put a candle worth of unknown mix into our formulation?

If you attend a church, ask if any of the kids rooms has a pieces of crayon? If you try asking at a elementary school or a pre-school they may make a trade for a new box!

Bret--

I kid you not. It works fine. I made Emmerts lube and wanted to color it. I was in a 99 Cent store and saw orange lipstick and bought 2 tubes. I used 1/2 of a stick and rthe color was good.

Yaley brand solid candle dye has always worked real well for me.....some of the liquids have been a big dissapointment. The Yaley brand can be found in hobby stores(michael's/hobby lobby) in the candle making section.

LLoyd, that would be too easy! We want complex solutions to simple problems here!

Thanks again for all of your ideas. It's great to come here for needed information from all of you that are full of very useful knowledge. Anyway, I did some pan lubing. I could not find any candle dye locally so I used a couple of green candles. It worked quite well. Not as dark as I hoped but dark enough to make out the color. My wife gave me some of her lipstick that she does not use to put in the lube for color. I will try this method for the next batch of pan lube I have to make.
I find this boolit casting and pan lubing very addictive, but I'm enjoying it.
