A rifle mould, modified somewhat-or "added to",for making cores for swaging as well....may help some of you on your quests....

I've got a 4 cavity 35891 that has a 10 cavity block on the bottom for 22 swaging. Home-made but I don't yet swage them.

Pouring lead into those 'added cavities' would be a neat trick...without matching holes in the sprue plate.

I wonder if the guy did that to improve venting...

Perhaps he had several sprue plates for whatever cavs he wanted to use?

he definately had to have another sprue plate.
he might have poured soft lead into the plain ones then poured harder lead around them.
after putting them into the regular mold.

Thanks Madcaster! Got Me thinking!!

I wonder if this technique could be used to help "cold molds". I have an old Ideal single cavity 225415 which gives me fits trying to keep it hot enough to get good fill out. I can't keep up Bullshop's pace for very long, either a bullet sticks in the block, or I get tired. 50 grains of hot lead just isn't enough heat in my cold basement.

Based on this idea, I am going to look up Joe B's old threads on Hot / Cold molds and cavity size vs block size, try to figure the best volume of lead, and bore one or two "heat wells" in the blocks, and a hole or two in the sprue plate.

Think this is worth the trouble?

Madcaster,

Try taking the sprue plate off once. Maybe the guy drilled another hole just a little farther down for the sprue plate screw so that the holes in the sprue plate will line up with the core cavities when shifted to the secondary position. This would offset the plate without the need of a custom one. I could be way off here, but it would be worth a shot.
