Has any one tried the 311284 in the 30-30? I've got a 1951 mod. 336 with a ballard style bore.
A while ago I cast up a bunch of 311284 from straight ww air cooled them and sized them to .311 and used a flat top punch for my krag deer load.
They look just like a long 30-30 bullet with that flat nose. I'm thinking I won't have enough twist to stabilize a 205 gr. bullet. Any body using this bullet? [smilie=1:

I shoot it in an 03 30-06 with 45gr 4831 and I'm guessing near 2000fps. It starts to keyhole beyond about 300yds which is probably about what a 30-30 would start at. It looks to me like it would be too long for my 94Win but might work in a bolt gun. Why not try it?

Your 30-30 has a 10" twist and there's enough powder capacity for 1900 to 2000 fps with 311284 given the right powder. My old 336A (24" bbl) works very well with 198-200 grain bullets at a bit over 2100 fps. Try 35 grains of a spherical powder in the burn rate between H414 and Ramshot Hunter. There's room for a little more H414/760 in the little case, but 35 grains is a pretty good place to start. I'm curious what kind of alloy you're using to cast 311284 at only 205 grains. If your bullets are actually coming out somewhat heavier than 205 grains, you can use a full case of Ramshot Hunter with good results.

Hi MJ
I'm cast form straight WW. 205 is the weight only if memory serves me correctly. (scale is over at the gun shop) Lyman used to list them as a 214 gr. from #2 and .315 dia. Mine are a tick under .311 from the mould and not as heavy. The .311 lubra sizer just removes the fins and feathers.
Thanks for the good info

My winnie shoots the 30-180-FN just fine and it weighs in at a little over 190 grains. I'd say that it will stabilize it. 311284s have a pretty tight nose. be sure they'll chamber after bumping the flat on there./beagle

I use 311284 in 30-30 with a 12" twist and it stabilizes fine. I use 14gr H110 or 20gr of WC845. Both give good accuracy.

I'd say that you wouldn't notice much stabilty problems in the first 150-200 yards depending on the velocity. I would try 748 or 760 in the 18-2000 fps range and see how she does at 100 before condeming this boolit. May have trouble with it loading from the tubular magazine however, its a longish .30.

Good luck, and make sure you report back your results so we can see how it works out.
