Do only one case for a checkout. Yes, it can easily be done with zero hassle. Load the case with bullet. Chamber in 270 with magic marker around case neck. If magic marker rubs off upon bolt closure, the cases are too fat for that gun. Turn the neck, or don't use those particular cases. ... felix

Also be sure to only push the case a little into the die at a time, rotate a little and send it in a little further, repeat until sized. Will give a more consistent case. This is what I do when sizing down .223 brass to make 7.62x25.

I've necked down quite a few with a standard 270 Win FL sizing die over the years. They come out a hair shorter than 270 Win head stamped brass if that matters to you.

I have done it without knowing it.

I should pay more attention when I size rifle brass.

I used to have access to a lot of 06 brass and resized to .270. No problems for me except a few brands had thick necks I had to turn and a few would split necks after firing a few times because of work hardening the brass. A simple annealing of the necks took care of the batches that had a few split. Be very careful in your segregation of cases, at one time I had 3 calibers with 06 head stamps, but free brass is free brass!

I take 30-06 brass all the way down from 308 to 6mm for my 6mm-06. I just do it in stages. I anneal the necks to start with, then start with a 280 Rem die w/o the expander button, then go to the 270, and the 25-06, and lastly the 6mm06 with the expander button back in. The brass is then loaded, fire formed, and inside neck reamed, and annealed one last time and I have new brass for my 6mm06.

Best wishes from the Bore Ranch,

Joe

I've not done it but have gone the other direction and done similar things with other parent cases. I don't see a problem.

Case neck of the .270 is a little bit longer than the .30-06. Probably just means you get to load them longer before trimming.
