probably made for the European market, their tv's use a different something or other and are not compatible with u.s. stuff. we wanted to watch a bbs documentary that was only available from overseas and it was a no go over here.

Check the packaging and see if the video standard is NTSC, which is what we use here in the USA. If it is PAL or SECAM it won't work.

I can't speak for yours, but my computer can play either standard. So maybe try it in the computer?

Try it with a different reader if you can. Had some that would not play on certain machines.

Is the disc cracked from the center out? If so they are toast.

I googled "Sharpe's Rifles DVD", because I had no idea what you are talking about.
the first hit was Amazon, with this description.

Sharpe - Complete Series (15 Films) - 8-DVD Box Set ( Sharpe's Rifles / Sharpe's Eagle / Sharpe's Company / Sharpe's Enemy / Sharpe's Honour / Sh [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - United Kingdom ]

If your DVDs are PAL format (like above), then you need a special DVD player.

What kind of a DVD player are you talking about...a stand alone add on to the TV? or one that is in a Desk top or laptop computer?
If you have a computer...it should be able to play either pal or ntsc. If it won't play them...You can try one of these:

Also found in many libraries. Definitely worth the time to watch.

Not necessarily. If you have a DVD burner/player in your computer you can change the region code. They normally allow the change 3-6 times. The last two external drives I bought came uncoded and I had to set it. May be an option for the OP.

For euro sourced dvd and blue rays I run them on my laptop with an Hdmi cable to the big screen. Works exactly the same as the blue ray player, the operation icons show up on screen and respond to the tv remote. has worked with Dutch, Brit and Asian sourced discs.

My wife and I watched them together...she read the books so then we got the TV series and watched together. Watch them here free:

As I read along the thread I was thinking about a business that does video wok can likely burn you a copy that will play with our video standard.

That would cost money however. If you can get it to play on your computer that will be less expensive or free.

Best of luck

My wife is a Bernard Cornwell fan so after she read these books (http://www.bernardcornwell.net/the-last-kingdom-tv-series/)
So we watched the series ALSO very entertaining. Unfortunately not available to watch free on youtube. In later episodes it was purchased and produced by netflix and it got really dark. Earlier episodes were best.

I think a blue ray player will play dvd of different regions.
