what is the favorite mold for six shooters?

I'm kind of partial to the old Lyman/Ideal 454190. That was Lyman's attempt at duplicating the factory bullet and is pretty accurate. The 454424's a good choice for hunting./beagle

Beagle's got it.

Now, for just a big ole pile of boolits really fast for plinking, the Lee 6-banger in 200 RF works. Also works in the 45 acp. A pinch of BE, RD, GD or Unique, and voila!

Another good one is the Lee 255 RF. Of course, the 200 is more economical.

I am just looking for plinking at the range

I have the Lee 6 hole mold 255 grain. it works good in my wheel guns, (5 shooters, I always carry on an empty [smilie=1: )

In my Puma 1892 they shoot real good. I use them for lever gun silhouette.

I use clays for powder.

I really like the RCBS 45-270-SAA bullet. Pretty dang accurate in my Blackhawk. But then I really haven't experimented greatly with other bullets. This one worked well and I stayed with it. It works well for plinking or heavy loads. Good-luck...BCB

I like the 260 Keith but I've got an extra Lee 250gr RNFP mold if you need one.

I use the Lee 200 RNFP 6-cav with a 20-1, 30-1, and 40-1 alloy; tumble lube with liquid alox from Lee and White Label ontop of 4-6grs of clays. I really likethe 40-1 with 4.5grs of clays. It is a nice light plinking load. I use them in two ruger vacqueros.

Here are a couple of groups fired with the 45-270-SAA from my Blackhawk. I think the distance was 15 yards, but I really don't remember without finding the actual targets...

UPDATE: The distance was 50 feet...

Nine grains of Unique is a good load as are several heavier loads using AA#9, WC-820, and H-110...

Good-luck...BCB

It works well for me in the sixguns. The only thing I fault it for is that the mold only has two cavities.
Also, if you are burdened with the Taurus Thunderbolt rifle, this bullet makes a round that is 50/1000" too long and won't function in it.
This has caused me to buy the Lyman 452664. It's a four cavity mold, and I should be able to cast up a storm with it.
It should work like gangbusters in the revolvers.
I'm also eyeing the RCBS 45-270-SAA Keith bullet mold (for sixguns).
If the 452424 doesn't work in the Taurus, I'll have to resign myself to buying the RCBS 45-250-FN.

Happy Shootin'! -Tom

In the 45 Colt I like big and heavy (250-300 grs) but can load down with as small as 200 - 230 for plinking.

My favorite is the RCBS 270 SAA, I also use the 454190 Lyman and lately a Lee 454255 Round Flat. All these moulds cast at least 454 and no more than 455. I size to 452 for 5 guns and 454 for 2. I really like the Lee as I can drop a lot of boolits fast, I was initially worried about the tiny lube grooves, but I have not had a problem.

so I can load my 45acp boolits up for some light plinkers? Cool, I just got the group buy 45 H&G#68. What do you guys think about this?

My Lee 255 RNFP casts at 245g from WW, wish it cast heavier, but as a 6 gang mould, it beats the pants off my RCBS 2 gang 255 SWC, so that's what I shoot most.

8.5 ~ 9g Unique and it's good-to-go. :)

I have had extensive use with the Lyman 452664 RNFP with both black powder and smokeless. I got it when I really would have preferred the Keith 452424. However, I was shooting BPCR and they had black powder side matches. The Lyman looks more like a Cowboy bullet (that's what Lyman calls it). It also has a large enough grease groove to hold enough of the proper lube for black powder.

I was popular in the Cowboy shoots and the bullets looked good on the gun belt:mrgreen:. Of course, the most important characteristic was that it shot well. I had under 2" with black powder at 25 yards and could shoot 75 rounds before black powder fouling raised it's ugly head. That WAS important.

All of that said, my first choice would be the Keith 452424 (old moulds carry the 454424 number) for general use. In the last couple of days a gentleman on this board sold me a 454424 four cavity for my Ruger Bisley and my 625's. I am looking forward to using it when it is received.

Most 250 gr bullets will more nearly shoot to the sights with a fixed sighted .45 Colt as that is the bullet weight that they are regulated for. My Ruger Bisley Vaquero shoots exactly to the sights at 25 yards. That is a blessing...

Yep! Light 200 grain .45 ACP SWCs work great as plinkers. I've shot loads of them but prefer a little more weight in the .45 Colt./beagle

RCBS 270-SAA is my favorite, 325gr LFNGC from Mountain Moulds is next.

RCBS 255 (looks like a Kieth) over 9.0 Unique. Nuttin shoots better for me out of the smith 25-5. I won quite a few silly wet leagues with it. Groups about 5" at 100 yards.

i use a 160 rnfp over clays for just plain fun and shooting grouse when hunting.
the h&g 200 works nice too, i use it for lever silhouette shooting.
a 200 rnfp for cowboy shooting.
a 230 rn for the acp just cause i got some
a 250 rnfp is my main rifle shoter. but i just got a keith type clone so all this might change.
i shoot these in the 1911 and 625 also, why cause i got the molds and they are there.

You did say plinkin and I've found the RCBS 45-230-cm to be a great bullet. The point of aim is just a little low at 25. Loaded with 4.6 gr. of Clays and you don't want to stop. I've used this bullet in SASS and paper shooting. For a more serious type shooting such as the suggested bullets above all are good. Any thing in 255 up to 300 for a hunting round.

Tom Herman, I'm sorry to hear that you also have a Taurus Thunderbolt. Mine is at the factory for the third time. I have had the gun at my house for about 9 days since buying it new in July. The rest of the time it has been at the factory. I told them if they would pay me what I paid for it they could just keep it. I also told them that I could not sell it as I would not stick someone like they did me. Wishing you the best of luck.

I also use the RCBS 45-230CM a lot in my 45 Colt pistols and rifles with WST. Great shooting bullet. The RCBS 45-255 is also great with 231 for lighter loads and Bluedot for heavier loads. I don't shoot top end loads.

Hi Cajun!

Sorry to hear that your Taurus is hibernating at the factory... I swore I'd NEVER buy one, but lo and behold! at one gunshow, there was a brand new one at a fire sale price and no paperwork.
If I'd known beforehand that they didn't handle the longer rounds, I probably wouldn't have picked it up.
The casting session with the 452664 mold was cut short by something scratching up the top of the mold, so I will have to pull the sprue plate off, file it, and carefully polish off any sharp edges.
I have enough cast to put about three tubes full through it.
The 452664 looks to be about .080" shorter than the 452424, so that will give me 20-30 thousandths to play with.
Before I got the new mold, I ordered a new cartridge carrier from Taurus and successfully filed it down to handle the longer rounds.
Regrettably, the longer round and bullet shape kept the round from chambering unless I spun the gun upside down and the pushed the round itno the chamber by hand.
We'll see how the new round works. If i can get 45 to shoot properly, I'll declare it cured.
The chamber seems to be a bit, umm, large and bulges the brass slightly.
It is fortunately reuseable.
I wish you the best of luck with your gun. I know what it's like. I had three Ruger Redhawks in a row need gunsmithing so they would even work.
I'm still waiting for Ruger to refund my shipping on the last one. Bah. Humbug.

Happy Shootin'! -Tom
