I recently picked up a Winchester M70 Classic Stainless in 7Mag. I bought it with the intention of rebarrelling it, as I don't need a 7mag. I am thinking it'd be nice to rebarrel it to .458WM and load it primarily like a warm .45-70. I have read that the .458 does not like boolits due to the long throat. Can it be chambered so that it will shoot cast well? Who would I contact about doing this?

Would a .416 Taylor be better?

The 458 Lott has a boolit friendly throat.

Prolly not as is but could be made to be.

Hmm.

Since I'm really planning on downloading this for the most part, I'd probably rather use a .458W if a barrel could be chambered with the appropriate throat. I guess what I'm wondering is, who has a .458W reamer that is appropriate for boolits?

Thanks for the help, Dan.

My neighbor shoots a 540gr Paul Jones creedmore bullet in his Remington 700 458 with 25gr of 4227. Turned his elephant gun into a very accurate rabbit gun.

Bullshop's right. Back when it was popular, I re chambered two of these to 7mm STW. It's been a long time, but if memory serves, I lengthened the stroke by shortening the ejector and bolt stop, and lengthened the magazine by removing the tacked-on rear partition used to shorten it. Not being controlled feed, Rem. 700's were a lot easier.

On the custom 458 reamer I think you will have to bite the bullet so to speak and pony up. I had the same thing in mind but couldnt find one either. Seem lots of folks have wanted the same thing but no one has gone the distance. I think if you have a reamer made that it would proly get passed arround quite a bit here. Might even come out ahead. I had one made up for boolits (different caliber) with a 1% lead angle and it shoots boolits ever so wonderfully. BTW I do have a Lott reamer.
Happy big boolit dreamin!

Shoot, sounds like a plan! How much money could they be?

Any suggestions as to the specs? I don't know doodly about all that, but surely some of the bullet designers here could spec one out nicely.

What about .458 x 2"?

Might be more suitable for cast and is really a belted .45-70 in a bolt gun.

...............From what I understand, the throat and leade of the 458 WinMag is the bee's knees for cast. Possibly I was reading of the Ruger #1 where length doesn't matter, if OAL is an issue in the M70.

I rebarraled my 70 classic to a 416 taylor. I had talked to several knowledgeable gs as well as shooters. I shoot only the RCBS 350 gr.gc boolit for everything, from straight ww to alloyed 50/50 ww/pb to water quenched hardened. Excellent accuracy and power if needed. :castmine: Robert

Cool, Robert. Got pics? How long's the barrel?

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Hope I'm not too late, my CZ 550 safari mag in 458 win mag does have a long throat. But if you want warm 45/70 loads it will shoot them very easily and accuratly.

450gn hardcast at 1900fps is very easy,
465gn at 1900fps also'
465gn at 2250 just a lil more difficult, but easy enough.

Hey Crgaston. Since I really had no idea of where I would be using it, Africa, Canada or in the U.P. here in Mich. I put a 22" Shilen on it. I put on a barrel banded front sight as well a barrel band sling swivel. I put a setnon-adjustable Williams rear sight that I filed to a 100 yd. zero with 350 gr. Barnes. I mounted a Leupould 1 1/2 X5 European post reticule scope with their quick removable bases. I put an additional recoil lug in the stock then glassed it. The trigger is set to 3 lb., my idea for a hunting rifle. I have tried all manner of Speer, Hornady (soft point and solid), Barnes from 300 gr. to 400 gr. (hollow points and bronze solids). My rifle favored the Barnes 350 gr. and the Hornady 400 gr. solid. All I put thru it now are RCBS 350 gr. cast wq ww gc Boolits. Ken Waters wrote me and recomended 50 gr. 3031. It is a mite hot for me, I settled on 45 gr. I explained to Three44s on another thread here about the Taylor. Sorry about no pics., I am "Computer Stupid" as they call an old man on a computer! Funny, I can build a rifle - but am stumped by a keyboard? :coffeecom
