How do cast HP's perform?

Looking around I see and am interested in hollow point cast boolits. I wonder, at what hardness do they retain the most weight upon impact and deformation? I know it's a broad question, so any info. would be appreciated.

For what it's worth....
These .45acp's were cast from 50/50 wheel weights/pure lead.
Fired at a distance of approx. 10 feet.
The left one was into a soft dry sand bank, the right one into water.
Have'nt got a clue how they'd perform on live tissue though .............

I use simple binary alloys for HP bullets. Usually 30/1 and never harder than 20/1, lead/tin.

From the 45-70 expansion is good, usually to 60 or 70 caliber.

From the 38 Special, it usually goes about 40 maybe 45 caliber.

44 and 36 revolvers (cap and ball) maybe 50 and 40 respectively.

45 Colt, the bunnies exploded.

It is a function of alloy and speed. A fine line between expansion and explosion.

Water's been used a great deal by the ammo companies for expansion testing. Often results in more expansion than bullets actually recovered from animals, but that's highly variable.
