Did some range time on Sunday, working on the 100yd gong with the C358180RF/16gr LilGun load. Chrony'd out of my 20" Rossi at 1850ish (two across, 1852, 1848)

Smacks that 23lb plate with authority.

Then I got a wild hair and decided to throw one across the Chrony out of my 2.5" SP101...

I should have had someone videoing it. Wasn't too bad really. Actually, to my hand, less painful than factory .158gr. More push, less snap. Not sure about the fireball.

That said, I wasn't ready for the Chrony readout.

1697 fps. :holysheep

The thing only lost 150 fps!

Yeah. Nearly 1700 from a 2.5" snubby. Sweet Mary I am so strapped!

180rg boolit out of a 2.5" .357 magnum revolver at 1700fps? I'd say you've exceeded the pressure standard for the cartridge.

Be careful!

Stew

I may send a handful out to be pressure tested, but they are really for the Rifle anyway.

Oh, FWIW, there was no case-sticking, the primers/case heads looked no worse than Factory Buffalo Bore 180s.

Wow!

I prefer 15gr or so of lilgun with my 180gr boolits in my win 94 levergun. They really move!

Last year I shot a small buck with them, and they worked great!

Is it possible the muzzle blast tripped the chronograph? I have had some weird things happen. If you would, try moving the chronograph out to say 25 ft. I'm curious.

That Lil'Gun is an amazing powder. All the advantages of H-110/WW296 and none of the load density problems. I've been using it in my .44's and 454's. Not only are the numbers impressive, the stuff shoots very accurately.

Still, even with Lilgun, 1700 plus out of a stubby barrel with a 180 is higher than the old high pressure standards of a 158 in a much longer barrelled revolver.

I use Lilgun myself in a variety of cartridges, but at some point the lunch ain't free.

I think this is one of those times.

I wonder about those chrono results myself, and a loss that small from that short of a barrel doesn't sound reasonable.

I suppose it's possible, but I was at the same firing line I had used for the various Rifles of the day... from .357 to .45Colt to .22 to 303 to .4570... All of those chrony'd fine.

I'll be sure to try it again when I go back down there. (My range is almost 40mi away)

Thanks, I would be interested. The last time I chronographed, I couldn't get a single round to record from my 6-1/2" 50-70 Contender. I tried my .22 Ruger MKII, and it read every time. No dice with the 50-70.

I remembered reading something about guns with a large blast sometimes doing funny things. I moved the chrono another 10 ft. and the 50-70 read perfectly every time. I dunno.

I once got a reading of 3200+ fps with a super black hawk .44 mag with a 6.5" barrel. When I asked the tech about this IMPOSSIBLE speed he told me that the machine was to close to the gun. A blast from the muzzle OR cylinder gap could shake the electronics enough to cause an error.! I have never had it happen again so maybe the tech was correct!

Oehler 35P with 3 screens and a proof channel cures "anomalies". They cost more for a reason (actually several reasons).

Chronys are great at getting you numbers, measurements are a different matter.
