Someone said that the Lyman 45th ed. load manual had data for a 9X19 with a 158 gr bullet. Sounds like it would be fun to try if true. Anyone have any data?

I think that the referenced load was 3.0 gr of bullseye but would like this confirmed.

I think I have the 45th ed, but it will have to wait till I get home tonight. I can tell you that I load Lyman's 358477 bullet in 9X19. I cast that bullet in #2 alloy and it come out at about 152 grains. I size it to .356 and load it with 6 grains of BlueDot. One of my favorate loads that feeds through my Ruger perfectly.

Sounds like a pretty close load to the 147gr. #2 alloy with 5.9 (max) bluedot load in the 3rd Ed. Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook. Listed Velocity is only 980, with a slightly heavier boolit (like the 152gr) it should drop to around 950-960 range. Well under super sonic.

Might be a nice load in a sub-gun.

Edit: If the #358477 wont feed very well for you, you might try the #358311 (RN) or the #358665 (RNFP) with a similar charge to whatever you use. These may feed a little better for you.

My old Lyman book is missing the front cover, so I'm not sue what number it is, but it does list the following loads for the 158 grain 358311 bullet:
Bullseye: 3.0 869fps 3.5 961fps
Red Dot: 3.0 858fps 3.6 963fps
Unique : 3.5 883fps 4.5 1039fps
Herco: 3.6 840fps 4.6 1010fps

Perfect, the 311 is just the one I wanted to try.

I may also try the lee 158 gr SWC if it will fit, but the nose and seating depth will be considered too- if that is tried and it is seated deeper, maybe even less powder; 2 grains of bullseye? Hmm. Might work as a cat sneeze load. Should still be enough to move the bullet out of the gun.

Well, if nothing else you could always make up a dummy cartridge with the the various boolits in fired cases. See Which ones wont seat to proper length. And load some cartridges up with the ones that do, to see which load gives you better results.

I usually just remove the pin from my sizer die, size, flare, seat and crimp a boolit in the fired case. And check how they chamber with those.

I have a large supply of Lyman 358156 cast bullets. These are already sized to .357 lubed and gas checked. I am resizing to .356 in a Lee sizer and loading behind 3.5 grains of unique. Don't even bother to crimp since the bullet is so deep in the case and there is so much surface contact between the case and bullet. I experimented like JD did before I primed and loaded to make sure they would cycle. I have fired about 500 rds and far no problems. Cheap shooting as these bullets are about 25 yrs old and some of them have tarnish on the gas checks.

I loaded a bunch of the Lee 158 RF bullets with about 3.5 grains of Unique and they fed and shot fine. Figured the big blunt nose on them would be pretty effective if I had to shoot something with the 9mm in cast.

I use 3.2 gr of Bull behind a 147 gr FMJ/TC
as my load of choice
Nice subsonic round in a blowback
locked breach weapons need a little more umph
leadd will seal better and give higher pressures
so 3 gr Bull is a fine starting point

I would think the heavy boolit would give more recoil? that would not be good on the moving parts in an auto

Actually, I would suggest the opposite. The heavier bullet is traveling more slowly, that means the equal and opposite impulse on the slide will be slower than faster bullets. I notice this myself when shooting my 152 grain load side by side with my 120 grain load. I can tell that the slide moves physically more slowly.

it would with the same powder charge
load it down and it works fine!

I think it should be fine. I have considered sizing my LEE 158g SWC-TL down to .356 and trying them in my Ruger PC-9 Carbine. I think that they would make for an excelent target load for the range. My major concern has been Whether or not that load would have enough power to get the boolit down the entire 16 inches of barrel.

ok that may work I havent done it so dont know . Just know the rifle and heavy boolits seem to recoil more rick
