One of the things about these rifles is that the bore diameter can be all over the map. A lot of guys use a .312 diameter mold and get by just fine. My MN needs to have boolits sized to at least .314. This is a case where bore slugging is just about a must must to determine the proper diameter mold. I use the Lyman 314299, or Accurate Mold's version of the same thing (31-200L), except with a flat tip. Another one I use is the Accurate 31-200R. Both of these I specced to cast to .315. I have had great success with RL7 powder in this caliber with my cast boolits.

I like the Lee 312-185 sized to .314 in my Mosins. Shot over 2400

In my Finn M39 I use the NOE version of #314299, sized .314" with 30 grains of IMR4064, RL15 or Varget.

That’s what I have.

Another one that shot better was 314284 Krag bullet sized to 312. I don’t have this mold but a retired coworker gave me a box he cast. Wow. I may just suck at bullet casting but his bullets were easy to get good groups with.

When I slugged both of mine, they came out as 4 groove with one pair being .312" and the other .314", so a chamber cast and sizing to the throat might be a good idea.

The appropriately-diametered 3??299 has shot well across multiple platforms for me.

A nice plinking/small game load in 7.62x54R is the LEE TL314-90, sized .314 and lightly lubed with LLA. I use it with 3.2 grains of Bullseye for miles of smiles. It's very accurate and fun to shoot.

Two molds that have worked in the .303 British and the 7.62x54 are the Lyman 314299 and 311291. Red Dot (13.0 grs.) and 2400 are my favorite powders.

2 of my rifles like the Lee bullet with the normal grease groves , designed for the 7.62 X 39 ...I did open the cavities up to .315

For the 7.62 X 39 I size and powder coat at .313
For the 7.62 X 54R I size and powder coat at .315

My other mosin nagant only likes 180 or heavier case bullets

In my Mosin I load the Lee CTL312-160-2R sized and gaschecked at .312". I load all of the standard powder charges, Unique, 2400, etc.

Shoots good.

Thanks for all the answers. Looks like I need to cast the chamber.

My two cents worth. Finn model 27 lyman 314299 sized to .3135,Javelina lube, win LRP, Hansen cartridge cases and 20.0 grs IMR 4759.When the eyes work 2" groups @100 yds. Have a Finn model 39 with like new barrel but haven't slugged it yet. Frank

After slugging and determining the largest size bullet (diameter) that will chamber if it requires a .314 - .316 then consider the NOE 314299 or 316299. They shoot quite well in my MNs when GC'd and lubed with 2500+ over 28.5 gr H4895 with a dacron filler. Both my Finn M39 and my original sniper with put 10 shots into 1 - 1.5MOA consistently. Here is a typical 10 shot group from my M39 Finn.

Larry Gibson sent me some 311299s to try in my .314 barreled MN.
The barrel is a real sewer pipe but shoots them quite well.
Surprisingly, it shoots .312, .314, and .315 diameter better than my Spam Can light ball ammo.
16gr. 2400 and 1 gr. dacron.
Thanks again Larry…..dale

Dale, no surprise there.

Take ten of those light ball loads. Pull the bullets, look at them, and weigh them and then the charges. It will all make sense,

I was on my way to winning the Arizona State CBA Military Rifle State match with that target.

I want to powdercoat this and try it with black powder - mainly because I can make it, and the barrel on a Mosin is long enough for it to work.

^^^ Me too, started at 16.0 grains and had no reason to go further!
