I was sorting ww from a recycler and under all the junk I found 2/3 of a coffe can full of fmj bullets. They measure .307 and weigh about 145gr, some have traces of black on the base. Could these be from 7.62 NATO or .30-06 military.
I see no pull marks and they do have canalures, I was going to hot them with a hammer and throw them in the melt. I could save them for my Garand but the
.307 size seems to small.

The .307 dia isn't out of line for use in barrels of .308 groove dia. I bought a large lot of 147gr FMJBTs a few years ago and they were .307. They weren't match bullets, but they worked well enough. . . . .

Use them for plinkers. They're likely 7.62 NATO pulls. The black stuff is the sealant required on military ammo.

If you don't want to shoot them then sell them and buy better lead (and more) than you'll get from them. DALE

I have used a similar bullet in my M1 Garands M1A .. FN.. and they all shoot them well. I would hang on to them or maybe load up a couple hundred for the future.

One suggestion: put 'em in the tumbler and let 'em run for awhile to get the sealant off. Might take 24 hrs.

I would say that they were originally designed for the old 2 grove Springfield which generally slugs out at about 305. If you are ever of a mind to sell a few of them let me know. I have an old 2 grover that I would not mind having a few of them for.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

If they're boattails, they were for the 7.62 NATO. Common ball bullets are nominally 147 grains. .30-06 M2 Ball bullets are usually a little heavier, around 150 grains, and flat based. The .307" diameter's no problem.

If I had 'em, I'd shoot 'em through my Swiss rifles.

Ed Harris used .308 jacketed bullets in .311 bores (mosin, enfield, arisaka) with fast powders (13 gr red dot), and reported that they were fine for plinkers and practice ammo. .307 in a .308 should be no different.
