View Full Version : Old powder cans, tins & kegs

Anyone know of a book or pamphlet listing old powder cans, dates, value, etc? I have about 25 of them sitting on shelves in my loading room. Most are from the 50's, 60's, 70's and are powder I bought for reloading. They vary from full with seals, to partial cans, to empty. Not looking to sell, just looking at them as a small collection or display. Some are fiber board, some metallic, from back when not everything came in plastic. DuPont, Hercules, Alcan, Hodgdon, WW, Bonanza, etc. Thanks. GJH

I don't know Ted and David, but Tom Rowe is one of the good guys and has published some excellent work covering old reloading tools.

Any idea what is covered in volume 1 and 2? Are V1 the older cans/kegs an V2 those somewhat newer - or do both volumes have a mix of all vintages? Both volume are a bit spendy, even on the used market. Thx.

I have accumulated a bunch of very old powder tins over the years and likely have 30 or more of them now. I was just thinking a few days ago that I think I'll talk to our local gun club's president and vice-president about adding a shelf in our clubhouse where we could display them? If we did, then maybe other members might add to the collection? We have very tall ceilings in our clubhouse so we could put them well up off the floor, maybe 8 to 10 feet, so that people won't fondle (or steal) them ...

I have Volume 1. I will dig it out and get a better answer for you, but from what I remember, Vol 1 is mainly the main/biggest powder companies of the US. Hazard, DuPont, Laflin and Rand etc. I do not have Vol 2 but I believe it dealt with smaller/lesser known companies. From what I remember in my book I think most of them were fairly early dated cans.
