I have a qty of .452 300gr cast and want to use them in my .50 cal muzzleloader. I bought some Harvester crush rib sabots and these bullets seem to fit ok and go down the bbl. Will these be too hard for deer hunting?. I don't have a mold yet just trying to use up what was given to me.

Well it all depends on what they were cast with... BUT a .45 boolit does not have to expand to kill a deer IF you hit it where the boolit should be placed.
Can you easily dig your thumnail into the lead ? That would be GREAT ! But I would not worry. If you can develope an accurate load you can shoot accuratly with confidence then you are ready. White tails fall yearly to alot less than a .45 300 grain boolit. A .45 round ball is half what you have and deer go plop when hit right.

I think they would be just fine!

practice and see what they do!

They will work just fine. The .45" hard cast bullets will make a fine wound channel. I've been using .429" wadcutters w/sabot in my .50 cal inline and have killed a number of deer and hogs without issue.

If you are worried about it drill a 1/8" hole in the nose of the bullet.

I would think it would work just fine. How much bigger do you need to go though, if the bullet is almost 1/2" already thats a 1/2" hole all the way through.

+1 Doug. I do the same to my boolits I cast out of WW's for my .50 inline and it makes a difference and you can experiment with drilling different depths of the hollow point to see what works the best and I drill mine around 1/4" deep. Shoot them into wet phone books to see how they expand with and without a HP tip.

I think I'd rather be too hard than too soft when pushing 1700 fps like most of us do with a muzzleloader and a 300gr .452 boolit from a sabot and let the meplat do it's job.
