I know it's a ol one and I have read some Old posts. But its been quiet for some
Time.

I was lent this mold thru a friend who wants me to cast some for him/us. Its very close profile to another favorite 457191. I had no knowledge of this mold. I had not cast with a lyman style HP mold.
The night it arrived I was intrigued and was home early with work paper work. As I finished and poured the last cup of coffee, I plugged in the pot. Finished the coffee and papers and went outside to cast some. The mold saw some Neglect so first I cleaned it up so it was proper Looking and placed it atop the pot. I gave it a goodly warm up and started casting. I was using soft lead and I over tinned it a bit cause when I do, my pot drips. WOW, what a beautiful casting mold!! Not one single cull!!! The hp tool makes it slow but makes my cadence about perfect cause out of the hundred plus bullets none where frosty and I never had to really stop for over heating.

I was so pleased, I made a quick search and located another for very nice price and bought it! Got a nice surprise when I opened the box... its number was 457122 CW! Darn thing came MONOGRAMMED TOO! [smilie=w:

I am considering it as a muzzle loader projectile as well as a bullet for my 450 Bushmaster and L Colt (sized down) of coarse Ill try a few in the 45/70 but that one is pretty solid with 400g Speers and 450 RD cast..

Gonna give some to a friend with a socomb and see if he likes it.

Just wondered if anyone had advice or comments about this grand ol timer.

A very old design, but excellent bullet. I had one years ago that I used in my Ruger #3. I found it easy to cast with in spite of being a hp and was very accurate. Never used it on big game, but image with the proper hardness would be excellent. I gave it to a friend after the rifle was stolen and he certainly liked it also.

This was one of my first moulds, shot in a 1972 Marlin 1895. I cast some in linotype and loaded them over 16 grains of Unique. Both charge and bullet were chosen from the original Lyman "Handbook of Cast Bullets." Man, they opened up running jackrabbits like the hides had been stretched on a board. Devastating varmint bullet. Never tried it on larger game, but, were I to do so, I'd soften the alloy considerably, so the bullet would open and not explode.

There's a thread about whisper loads using that boolit, I used to use the whisper loads in a 45/70 Ruger #3. Awesome dinger ringer. I'll see if I can find it later.

I shot a whitetail doe with one out of my 1895 Marlin Cowboy two years ago. I was shooting into the late afternoon sun making sighting difficult. She was facing me, a little quartering, 75 yards out, and my bullet missed her chest. It mowed off about 5 or 6 ribs before passing through both tenderloins (rats) and severing that big artery below the backbone. I didn't find the bullet (no surprise there) but there were some pieces of bullet that blew off and were still in her. The load was 25 gr of 2400. I did not expect it the bullet to expand at that low of a velocity. Mowing off that many ribs might have gotten things going. She stood there looking at me for about 10 seconds, then fell over due to loss of blood. Dead by the time I got to her.

BTW, that bullet will not chamber in my Shiloh Sharps due to that small band just outside the case.

Hi CW!
I cast/shoot the same bullet (457122) in my .45-70s and .45 Colts (sized down of course.) Just wanted to show you what worked well in my TC G2. These were powder coated and sized to .452. Ed

ETA: I guess I should post the standard disclaimer that this load is for my Thompson Center Contender G2 and may not be safe in your firearm, especially if not designed for higher pressure loads. Use the data at your own risk.

249911. I sized it to 454 & built a dummy 450 Bushmaster.

I load it over 17 gr Unique. Velocity it about 1300 fps. Used it on several deer and my son used it on one. Work fine.

I believe Elmer Keith had a load for a 300 grain 45-90 bullet and black powder for one of his 45 long Colts.
