Bullet Mold .44 Magnum 300-310 grain Recommendations

I am looking for a recommended bullet mold for a 300-310 grain bullet that is not gas checked for using in a lever gun for Bowling Pin events. I currently use TC Oregon Trail or Berry’s branded at the moment.

Considering that 300 grain bullets are usually in the 950-1050 fps range I am not sure gas checks are warranted, helps keep cost down. Also lever gun hits help minimize the amount of rounds fired, a match is usually 60-70 rounds and w a heavy and hard bullet I have bot seen significant leading.

i dont know of any.. best to get the Lee 310 and remove the gas check groove... pretty easy to do...

How do you remove the groove? Dremel flush with rest of mold? Scrape w/in a hair of mold wall using a near size drill bit and sandpaper flush?

I suggest you get a Lee 310 and use Trail Boss powder and you won't need a gas check. This is what I do with an MP-432-640. Mine is a gas check design and weighs about 270grains when cast as a solid.

yes bar, you can grind away and polish with a dremel, or you can do what BlueJay says, there are many roads to get where you wanna go... even the trail boss thing will work just fine...

That would be the case if speed was the determining factor, which it isn't. There are loads in that weight range and below 1000 FPS that are pushing 35k PSI. It is that pressure not the speed that causes leading.

On the other hand there are 45/70 loads, same weight, flying at 1,800 PSI, that only generate 22k PSI using slower powders. The alloy doesn't need to be all that hard to withstand that pressure, the bullet speed is pretty immaterial.

An Accurate Molds 43-310R 0r a 43-310D would get a pretty good "bite" on a bowling pin and Toms work is 1st rate. Have you tried to see if a 310 Lee will feed from a lever gun? The only experience I've had with a 44 levergun was a Ruger 96/44 and the rotary magazine hamstrung that rifle from the get go--for what I wanted to shoot at least.

2nd Tom at Accurate molds, he builds them for you & you can modify a current design or design your own. His molds are first rate. Noe is good also but you have to pick one of their stock molds & see if it’s in stock.

I would go directly to Accurate & find a design you like. The Lee 310gr is a good design, but I just don't need a gc at 1200fps. IMO, you dont need 300gr for bowling pins.
