:-D A wile back I asked opinions on a first deer rifle for my young boys . With everyones help I setttled on the .243 win.
On the second day of the hunt my oldest 13 took a 4 point with a clean chest shot at about 125 yd.
And on the third day my youngest 11 took a 6 point at 225 yd with a clean intended head shot (rested on a branch).
I had told him if he had a clean shot to take it. When he fired I asked where he had shot . He said that the deer was in heavy cover but his head centered up real nice in the crosshairs, so he took the shot. I figured well the deer is safe, but sure enugh he droped him like a sack of wet cement. I guess the solid year of practice paid off!! as well as the range and bullet drop work.
I just had to brag as my chest couldnt swell any bigger![smilie=w:

A .243 is an amazing caliber! I have two. One for the wife, one for me. We shoot mostly .30s, and they are unfired so far.
Good shot for the kids!
Back when I used to go duck hunting, I took three shells. The limit was three back then.
If I got a bird, I did not take another one untill I had the bird in my hand.
Something tells me, your son will carry that ethics into his adult life.
Good for him. Indeed.
You have a right to be proud. He learned to shoot like that somewhere.

what a deer with a .243? Gosh you need a .300 mag for deer. Unless you put the shot in the right place and it's a deer that has not been reading these forums. Congrats to the boys.

I think it was Jack Oconner who called it the .970 Remchester Wonder Magnum , or something like that.
I've been repeating Oconners words to them for the whole year ,"A good bullet in the right place" . Anyone notice I cant spell??LOL...Thanks guys.....Buck

That's pride dad. Next high point like this is when one makes you a grandpa.

But I pictured these kids running round with bolt action pistols, Contenders, or something. Didn't know you owned any rifles.

Well done ! Give your son a hand shake from me !!!!

I bought a .243 (Remington 788) in 1979 for my growing two sons... That is one super accurate rifle / cartridge combination.... My 100 pound 10 year old easily fired one inch groups with a 4x Weaver scope. He is 6 -4 now and 225. Last time it was fired was to pop a coyote crossing a bean field at 250 yards+ from our front yard (Indiana) on a cold January morning 1990.
