Has anyone tried round balls in rifles such as the .45-70 (Marlin) and .375 H&H? I'd like to practice with both calibers and wondered if round balls would work.

I have loaded 1 ,2 or 3 RB in my 45/70 for a while .

I cast them out of WW not pure lead .
With WW RB my basement groups are much better out of my Handie rifle

I tryed Lee Liquid on some a while back and have stuck to that way of lubing them .

I have 50 loaded for plinking , but all the hours at work and the ^$#$@&#@# snow that needs to be shoveled ( 8" last night) has kept me from shooting them.

I crimp into the center of the RB lightly
I am using Unique and a bit of dacron

I am not home to look up the charge and I can't remember for sure But 5 or 6 gr sticks in the hollow space between my ears

Recently, I saw a post on using balls that were a few thousands oversize, put through a Lee sizer so as to have a straight band around the middle to lightly crimp on and loaded with 10-12 gr FFG, no filler, he said it worked fine for him.

I use round balls in my 44-40, .375 Winchester and any 35 cal. including 38/357 mag. I pretty much use 3.1 grains of B'eye in all. In the 44 WCF I use a Lee .433 rb that won't chamber so I have to run it thru a sizer first. I also have .375 and .378 rb moulds. The 375 gets the .378's and any 375's get sized down to .360 for the 35's. All cast from wheelweights. Mostly they get the Lee alox treatment. Accuracy is about minute of squirrel at 20-25 yards and usually within an inch or so of point of aim with hunting loads. Try 'em, I think they're a blast! The feral cat in the chickenhouse thought so too. Regards, Woody

Last time I had a cat in a chicken coop to deal with, I think I used my grandpas .454 with cast lead. Not sure about the load. All I remember was that it kicked like a mule and we don't know where the cat went, but the inside of the chicken coop was red afterward, it was white before hand.

NuJudge,
I have used 3 round balls in the 45/70, and in montana I practiced with the 44 mag with round balls, getting ready for deer season. I use pellits in the 22 hornet and the 223 Remington for fun.

In .444 Marlin, I use 8gr. Unique with a round ball run thru the sizer and liquid alox lubed, crimped to hold it in place, magnum primer. Like Woody said, right on same point of aim at 25 yds. as full power loads. Real accurate at 25 yds or so...same same.
