Has anyone tried this powder in large cases such as the 45-70 or 45-120 sharps with cast bullets? If so what were your findings with it,such as leading or accuracy results? Did you use a tight or loose crimp with it...I am thinking of trying it in my 45-120....Damn sick of the old black powder stuff....Thanks

I used it in my 45-70. I dont have the powder charge but it was well above the listed "max" loading.

I used a light/mild crimp, on the bullet. I found it gave a true rainbow tragectory.

I am loading 12 grains under a LEE 340g (sized .458") launching 'em outa the Marlin Guide gun.
Shoots quite mild, but prolly drops away in a hurry beyond 120 yards or so
They group about the size of the 'X' ring on an NRA action target at 50 yards & I can repeatedly hit a12" fly wheel off an old engine, set across the dam at 100 yards
The results are acceptable to me for plinking ....and smacking the odd rabbit !

I didn't care for it at all in any caliber really. Unique has worked best in sub-sonic 45-70 loads for me with no filler.

I use 17 or 18 grs in a 458 Lott with a 500 gr Lee spire point it will get MOA or damn close out at 200 meters . I get about 1100 fps or less I was lookin for sub-sonic . As far as leading goes I haven't had any issues . Good luck James:-D

i have tried it in 45-70 and it was clean and consistent, but not quite enough velocity for me at listed max loads.
Unique is what I have settled on for 440g / 1200 fps plinkers.

I;ve tried some in 44mag cowboy loads and like what I've seen so far, still more work to do though.

Take a look at Accurate 5744. Light and fairly fluffy....works well in the old BP cases. Several years back there were a couple of articles in Rifle and/or Handloader magazines regarding it's use in the old ones.

Becareful there are reports of higher than normal pressures in in large capacity cases---large being 45/70 and greater.

12 gr in a 45/70 caused me no issues with pressure or leading but didn't deliver much in terms of accuracy.

OTOH my buddy used the same load and shot a 2" group at 100y which isn't bad at all.

Both were from trapdoors by the way.

Both of my big bores are modern day rifles,Perdersoli and Browning......You kniw one thing that has always bothered me is why you hear of the pressure issue's,ect when the data is published in loading manuals...I know that most are tested in a universal receiver...And there are some folks that will try loads in junk rifles...And there are those that say the large cases are for black powder only and hate the smokeless stuff...I have shot my share of black powder in the cartridge rifles and for once would like to try something different and something that is not such a chore to clean up after....Getting tired of all the work if you know what I mean....John:coffee:

I have used H4895 and H4198 using listed trap door levels in my 45-70. The H4895 had a little more shoulder "wack" to it then the H4198. Using both I was hitting the turkey at 400 meters with my Buffalo Classic with a cheep 4" high rear tang sight (set all the way to the top). I never developed the load much because I started shooting lever gun matches last summer. Maybe this winter I will pull the 45-70 dies out again.

I was using 405 grain boolits. I have around 20 500 grainers laying around I should load up and try. Also found promise with the 405 grain hollow base (soft with BP lube) boolits the local shop was selling.

Also tried Trailboss, but it seemed like the can was going empty to fast (but it's only a 9oz can)
