Am wanting to try some 300 grainers in my Winnie model 1894. Have not found any load data for same.

Available powders are Unique, 2400, SR4759, AA5744, IMR 4227, IMR 4198, and IMR 3031.

Good morning My old Lyman cast book only shows loads to 269 Gr boolits..BUT the test rifle was a Stevens 44 1/2 (weak)... So I would load the Unique load they show in my Winny.
9 gr Unique 269 gr (375296) = 1080fps This book lists only fast pistol / shotgun powders.
Inever used a heavier boolit in my 38-55 (1915) Winny than the standard 375248. With 30-1 lead plus a bump to .381 (my 9mm mak die) and CW it shoots 4 inches at 100 with me sitting on my lower posterior.

oneokie,

Saeco #571 300 gr

Unique, will work, but only get you 1150 fps before it shows pressure. I ran it up to 12.5-13 gr and stopped, primers were cratering.

2400 was not slow burning enough, for the speed I was trying to achieve. It showed pressure @1200fps. Didn't do much with this as I thought it peaked too soon.

18 gr 4759 and 5744 will work good I used it with no signs of excess pressure. I can't find the chrono data right now, and I sold my last Saeco #571 to Buckshot. I now shoot the same load with a Paul Jones 282 gr boolit. I'll try to chronograph the load next week.

4227 did good on the chronograph, but did not group well in my '94. I tried several loads with same results.

4198 and 3031 should work also *check Lyman 48th & 49th Edition for reference, I don't use either, because I can't get them to meter well, and refuse to trickle powder. I keep saying I'd like to get a RCBS Chargemaster Combo, so I can use the stick powders, but right now money is too tight for that. Someday............................

Hope that info help you,

Jon

I'm shooting a 270 grain with 3031 and vv 135. VV has the decided edge. 28 grains of 3031 and 32 grains of 135 are in the 1500 fps range so you'd need to reduce them both somewhat.

I have one of the new group buy Ideal/Lyman 375166 PB molds. It drops bullets with my WW with a little tin alloy around 320 grains. I have an 8 lb jug of MP 5744 and have gotten good accuracy with it for other cast bullets from 240 to 265 grains. I cannot find a max load listed for a 300+ grain bullet with 5744. Does anyone have a recommendation for this bullet?
