Walther PPQ Q5 Match Bullet Mold Questions

I recently started shooting IDPA using my Walther PPQ 4in 9mm. I have been using 147gr plated bullets with good results. Buying bullets is going to get expensive fast with shooting 300-500 rounds per week. I do cast for 9mm but haven't had great results with the Lee TL-356-124-2R mold in the PPQ. I am looking for a 147gr mold to use for my IDPA bullets. I was looking on Missouri Bullets and Bayou Bullets and they both have a similar 147gr bullet option. To me it looks like the Accurate Mold 35-147b (http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=35-147B-D.png). I was wondering if this would be a good mold for the PPQ and Q5? Should I get Brass or Aluminum or Steel?

I was thinking of starting off traditionally lube sizing then moving into the Hi-Tek coating. I have a ES powder coating system but it is messy and time consuming; I've tried PC wet tumble and dry tumble with poor results. I do like the even coating I get with ESPC though. Or should I forego the lube sizing and bet a bullet without lube groove like the Accurate 35-147x (http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=35-147X-D.png)?

I have looked at that NOE mold as well as the HTC356-135-RF-AH2 ( http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/index.php?cPath=34_463&osCsid=1n8a5nm469aoagbgn7q91vf621 ).

I have been casting a NLG 130-C from a 5 cav Accurate mold and coating with Hi-Tek running around 14 BHN alloy sized to .3575"also .3580" this has worked really good in 4" and 5" PPQ's.

I don't see why any of the Accurate NLG 35-147 p,d,h, or y would be a good mold for the PPQ, I have run Hi-Tek coated 147 gr bullets from Magma mold's with out any problems.

I don't see me ever going back to lubed bullets after using the Hi-Tek coating for 3 or 4 years now.

I bought the Lee 6 Cavity 356-125-2R, it casts really nice boolits. Using Lyman #2 and ESPC the boolits unsized are .360 and 130gr. The PPQ Q5 throat is .358, the barrel slugged at .3565; so I really need to run a .358 boolit, could proably get away with .357 boolit. If I size to .356 I can have a COAL of 1.125, but I will probably have leading issues. To plunk test I have to seat the boolit deep to a COAL of 1.065 if it is sized .357-.358. I feel that there is too much boolit in the case, is this okay/normal? I can use either Unique or Titegroup, just need to meet minor power factor.

This also has me concerned about trying to run a heavier boolit, unless I sent my barrel off to DougGuy and have it throated.

The biggest thing to check when loading 9 mm is the size of the bullet after loading, if your dies are swagging the bullet down to less than .3565" then you will have leading and poor accuracy.

Im using an Lyman M Die for case expansion and a Lee taper crimp die with very very light crimp. I have pulled the bullets after seating and they are still .357 or .358.

Sounds like you are doing good with the seated bullets, the only problem with deep seated bullets is that the pressure goes up the with the deeper bullet seating and the powder charge should lowered. Have you chronographed your loads 1.125" OAL compared to 1.065" OAL to see the difference with the same powder charge.

My Accurate 9 mm 130-C mold is a flat nose so this lets me have less of the bullet in the case ( 1.115 OAL) as opposed to a round nose design.

I have been shooting IDPA for the last 6 years and my scored have got better when I started shooting the Walther PPQ's.

I have not chronoed them yet, weather and time haven’t been too friendly lately.

I started IDPA with my PPQ shooting 124gr off the shelf cheap ball ammo. I blacked out the rear sight and went to a the local nail salon used some of the brightest orange polish I could find to color the front dot, that helped quite a bit. Next match loaded some 147gr plated PF ammo, even better. Sold a few items bought a Q5 and holster an hour before my next match, literally took it out of the box loaded it up with the PF hand loads and competed. First stage a down zero and had the best score out of the entire match for the stage, two more stages I had a down zero. The Q5 is an amazing gun especially for its price.

I shot Glocks for a long time, until I went to a very well respected and well know instructors course. That’s where I learned they didn’t work with my small hands. It was recommended I try a VP9 or PPQ , shot both and loved the PPQ trigger. Sold off my Glocks and bought Walther’s, haven’t looked back. Right off the bat the gun was way more comfortable to shoot and groups got better.

I tried to shoot Glock's in IDPA and didn't do very well. So went to Walther PPQ's , sold the Glock and my scores improved.

I have large hand's so I use the large grip panel and the best sight's I have tried are the Dawson Precision.

My PPQ likes powder coated cast just fine with no leading. Yeah, throat is a hair short, but wasn't nearly as bad as the G17 barrel I bought from lone wolf. (which Doug improved a lot)
I started with .356 and accuracy improved with .358 which is where I've been sitting with all my 9mms. I don't have bullet I like that is at 147 for the 9mm, 120TC is best I've got.

I think I’ve got it dialed in 15 shots, 15yds freehand, 1/3rd IDPA Target.

Ended up using the NOE 358-155-TC (ELCO) with the deep hollow point pin making a 147gr bullet, alloy is close to Lyman #2, Hi-Tek coated, sized .358, 2.8gr Titegroup, COAL 1.115, Lyman M Die and Lee FCD.

I tried the Lee taper crimp but the groups weren’t near as consistent. Pulled a few after the FCD the bullet base was .3575.

Hoping this group buy makes to try the mold out.

Try the NOE 355-155-TC with the deep hollow point pin. Comes out to 147-148gr, I can send you some next production run. It’s 100deg plus where I am right now, don’t plan on sitting in the garage by a 700deg pot in 100+ deg heat. I will wait till the weather cools off. It’s 10pm at night it’s still 95 deg outside.

I bought a 6cav mp brass mold. 145gr bbrn. Haven't got any range data yet as I'm waiting on a new expander plug. But the molds beautiful and rains bullets.
