I recently inherited from my dad 16 .44 mags. The two Rugers I want to use as shooters both have cyl. throats measuring .432" I just found an old Lyman 429421 which casts .433". Ok for the cylinder I think, but a bit large for the bore. Can I shoot these boolits as cast w/o sizing and be ok? Someday I may take them to the smith and have the cylinders reamed to properly fit the bore, but for now I would like to shoot them a bit and want to be safe. Will keep velocities around 900-950 fps. Thanks for any help, most of you guys know more about casting for wheelguns than I do.:?:

Plenty safe as cast. Best results will probably be had sizing to .432".

You didn't mention what the bore slugged out at.

I don't believe .001 over throat diameter will harm anything

don't go too hard on your alloy for the velocity your shooting at

sounds good, thanks guys. I did not slug the bore, but most Ruger SBHs seem to be at .4295 or so. My alloy runs about BHN 10-11, ok for easy to shoot light loads.

my rugers, I lapped a lee sizer till bullets are tight but can be pushed through the throat by hand. results are good. lee says if the diameter can chamber it can shoot. but I didn't want the sizer to be over throat size incase I end up with a design that has bearing surface up further than normal it could interfere with chambering in that instance.

Your cylinder throats are already big enough, no need to "ream" them. I have 3, 44 Magnum revolvers and all three have .431" throats. Groove diameters are from .429"-.430" so I size all my revolver bullets to .431", same diameter as the throats. Throats .002" larger than groove diameter is a good thing for accuracy and less leading.
