Range guys tell me about exciting things that happened during the week.
Sometimes they give me "evidence" of what happened.

Got this one last week.
Guy was shooting, but couldn't hit the target.
Bolt action with a scope.
Range guys help when asked.
They looked at the rifle. Bore sighted it.
Had him fire a round.
Not even close.
Looked at the ammo and found something strange.
Asked the guy what caliber the rifle was.
8mm Mauser.
Ammo was 7mm Mauser.
Necks now sized for 8MM.
Primers backing out.
But no one got hurt.
Guy blames the store for selling him the wrong ammo.

At least that wouldn't create an unsafe condition. I'm surprised it even generated enough pressure to burn the powder with a bullet that under sized.

Not recently, but I knew a guy who had a .30-30 lever gun and went shooting with a fella that had a .357 lever action.

He was telling me that since the ammo was cheaper, and he figured that if they fed through the loading gate,
he was going to start shooting .357s in his too.

I asked him what he thought was going to happen when a .357 caliber bullet tried to go down that .30 caliber barrel.

I got a, "Oh,,, I never thought about that".

I hate to admit this but a couple months ago i had left my magnifying shooting glasses at home and had to use regular shooting glasses. Was shooting a 41 mag wife was shooting 357 i picked up a 357 by mistake and dropped it in my 41 and it sounder strange and little recoil when i ejected shells saw why a 357 case split from the rim to mouth in three places . I put a couple pair of glasses in my car. And no with out glasses i can see the difference. You would have thought i would have no it was loose but no. At least i shot only one round not keep shooting.

Couple of weeks ago went shooting and picked a lot of brass. At home I started sorting and ran across a 357 Sig. With out the neck that is now straight. What gun would do that? Other than a straight case there wasn't any damage to the case.

I'm not sure danger is the right title here, more like "stupid". Are you going to use that brass to load 8mm now that it's properly fireformed? :bigsmyl2:

I think firing in a .40 S&W chamber would do that.

I have often thought it would be better, and a lot more fun to shoot with others, But then I read stuff like this topic, and it makes me realize there are also many times where I am soooo glad I usually shoot alone... Sheeesh...

I've found some of those. I thing Trooperdan is correct.

I have an odd assortment of stuff like this in my collection. Stuff like 308's fired in 30-06 chambers and 300 Winchesters fired in Weatherby chambers. I picked up a loaded 7STW AI the other day with the primer missing. By the looks of the case head it was fired extremely hot a few other times.

I've found 7mm and 8mm Mausers that were fired in the correct chambers with the primers backed out. The same with 303's, 30-30's and even a few 30-40's. Some of those old rifles had sloppy headspace.

Done it. Split case. Didn't hit target.

Once years ago during Deer hunting season, I found 5 cases laying on the ground.

I picked them up and what the ?

They each had this funny double diameter neck.
The head stamp was 7mm Mauser, but they had been shot in a 7.65 Arg rifle

That was one lucky deer I think, and not sure if the shooter learned anything

I have found many 25-06 cases that will fit .308 bullets.

357sig will headspace in a 40SW extractor...I reform 40SW brass using 40SW FL size die then necksize to 357sig all the time

Oh... that could not have gone well at all. Did the Contender action hold it?

When in high school my best buddy was trying to sight in his 30-06...getting patterns . Came back home and discovered the box of 30-06's had been reloaded by his Dad...yeah Dad had a 270 and formed the cases from 30-06 and put them right back into the 30-06 Remington factory box, we didn't bother to read what He had written on the back of the box....
Henry's Dad had a real good laugh and said he hoped this would break us of snitching his ammo without asking first...guilty as charged... I know he knew we would help ourselves to his stash of ammo now and again..but we got busted this time.

I actually have a 40 S&W barrel to interchange with my 357 Sig barrel for my Steyr. Same magazines, takes less than a minute to switch.

Hmmm hunter Safety Class instruction is BE SURE THE AMMO IS CORRECT FOR THE FIREARM. Among other vitally important stuff. And we did not issue a student a certificate of passing Hunter Safety Class when there was anything amiss about he/she understanding and abiding the rules. Period. The "grandfathered in" bunch could benefit from the classes as well it seems.

Believe it or not, no problem! I didn't get a chance to look through it. He just said there's a little lead in the bore. He ran a brush through it and handed it to me and it looked fine.

In my collection of unusual brass there’s a .40 S&W case that has a .45 caliber neck. I wonder how they even got it to stay in the magazine?
