I have been trying to find an accurate load for my Uberti 1873 24" .45 Colt rifle. So far about 4" is the best I can get it to shoot at 50yd.
It has a Marbles tang sight.

I have tried a bunch of different powders and loads but I only have one mold appropriate for this rifle, a Lyman 454190 that casts a very nice 250 gr. bullet that I have not been able to get good accuracy with from any of my 4 .45 Colt rifles. ( the Rossi short rifle does pretty good with it). I have been casting of 50/50 WW and pure lead for this rifle and have sized .451, .452 and .454. They all shoot pretty much the same.

The Uberti has a 1 in 17 twist (as best I can measure) and should do good with a 250 gr. bullet. The bore slugs at .450 and is smooth as glass. It does seem to have a slight constriction just at the lead of the rifling but not much.

I ordered a 452-200-RF mold from Lee. We will see how it goes and report.

What do you guys think?? May have to fire lap the constriction out or make a hand lap and do a little work on it.

That constriction would size down the boolit and then let it rattle the
rest of the way, not good for accy. Try softer alloy and faster powder.

10 gr Unique.

Ditto the 10 grains Unique, or try 6.5 grains Trail Boss, sized .454. @.452, I got a little leading at the throat.

The twist in your gun should be 1:16.

Thanks guys, The constriction in this rifle is very little. When sluging to measure the bore, the slug was tight in the bore so I used the palm of my hand to bump the knob on my rod to get it started mooving, it slid along smoothly all the way down from the muzzle untill it came to the throat /lead area where I was expecting it to exit the bore, It hung up there and needed a bump with the palm to completely pass through. Not a lot, just a bump.
I did this twice using #8 egg sinkers as slugs. I shoved a soft unsized lubed .45 bullet through also with the same results. All three slugs measure .450 groove dia.
I am shooting soft .50/50 WW/pure lead bullets.
This is a WIN 73 so loads need to be below 14,000psi. I believe 8 gr. Unique is about max for the toggle link guns. Yes/No?

I have used 8 grains of Unique behind an RCBS 250 FN in my NHR 45 with good results. Very low recoil, but I think the action lockup is more like a Marlin than a traditional Henry.

I would guess that 3 out of ever 45 Colt rifles I see has a small constriction or dent in the bore under the front sight. You have a thin barrel wall and if the front sight is not fitted exactly it will wrinkle the bore right under the sight and accuracy goes south. The cure is to shorten the barrel and fit the sight properly. Taurus and Rossi are big offenders here, they run a dovetail and then push in a sight with a press. I am currently shooting 8 grinas of PB and a Lee cast bullet in my CD 45 Colt rifle. Groups are running under 3" at 100 yards with buckhorn iron sights.
