Well as it happens we all get old. My father is now 80 and is nowhere near the man he used to be, as is to be expected.

While visiting and chatting for the weekend, I left with something I'd not expected.

He gave me his Marlin 30-30 336RC, that he bought new in 1967. It's seen use, and he took care of all of his firearms quite well. It almost looks new.

So I now have a new toy.

With several hundred pieces of brass already in possession. What to load came to mind.

I would be interested in seeing a pic of the boolits you like to shoot in your 30-30.

Pics or it never happened Blammer!!! Gotta see this Gem!!!

You gunna hunt with it?? Or is it gunna be tucked away... Might wanna try the Hammer of Thor Boolit that was on Group buy earlier is year? I thought I saw your name there.. haven’t killed anything with it yet, but my old 94 loves it.. I am Sure it will be deadly for deer!!!

Here is the link..

The bullet Markopolo referred to function easily through my Win 94. I also like the 311041. Both good shooters.

I like my 311041.
It does fine in a old Win. 94, 30-06, and even in a M1A.

I've always had good luck with the Lee C309-150-F sized .310 over 27 grains IMR 4895 in all my .30-30's. Currently trying out the C309-170-F and it looks promising.

+ 1 on the C309-150-F. It was the first boolit I ever cast in a Lee single cavity mold way back in the 60's. I load it with 28.5 grs. IMR 3031 in my Winchester model 64, thutty-thutty.

I'm gonna hunt with it.

A fixed 4 power sets on top of it currently, works good enough.

Took the rifle and some other rifle to deer camp to go pig hunting this weekend. I'll be dangburned if I didn't forget ALL of my ammo for ALL of my guns.

Two of my guns there is no store ammo to be had for it, so they were DIW, the third was Dad's 30-30. :)

Found a box of Fed 150gr for $20 and some change at the local Ace Hardware store, 3-4 shots to zero and away I went. Didn't see any pigs, saw two really really fat large Coons, not Coon season so they played in the water and did their thing.

Had a good time that weekend anyway.

Burned me up having to BUY ammo, but what's a man to do when ya make a mistake.

Wow, from what I can see of it, it looks pretty clean...

I would really recommend the hammer of Thor Boolit if your gunna hunt hogs with it. hard pressed to find something that will hit harder for that rifle is your gunna hunt hogs..

That rifle looks near new. I just sold my 1894 Win 30/30 last week. That leaves me with a Marlin Marauder as my keeper 30/30. Not any help on cast loads. My standard load is 150gr JSP/ IMR-3031 for deer. I shoot a lot of light bullets for plinking and varmits. Speer 110hp for varmits & 110gr FMJs for M1carbine as plinkers, both with Win ball powders.

A 1967 model could have come with a Marlin(Universal/Japan) scope. The glossy finish looks like that scope.

I used an old Ideal 31141 to take my first "small bore" cast deer in a Savage 340 about nine years ago. Worked quite well. Before the next hunting season, I procured one of the original Ranchdog 165 grain bullets which also worked well in a .308 Savage 99. I think either would be a good place to start with that Marlin.

One of the great things about 30-30 chambered guns is that ammo is available just about everywhere.

don't remember the scope brand at the moment, but it's a pretty crisp clear one, with duplex reticles.
I"ll look in a min or two.

I predict you get close to a 1-inch group with that factory ammo whenever you try that gun out. Shoot it all up so you can refill them with cast.

Blammer. I have had really good luck with this NOE RD 165gr mold. This particular one was cut for non Marlin guns, but they make a Marlin version as well.
My Win 94 and Savage 340 love this thing!

Wow... clean gun... I just love that the marlins side eject.. I don’t like the way you need to mount scopes on my 94.. purty gun... did you figure out exactly what year it is??

Bazoo beat me to it. One thing about a .30-30 is ammo just about everywhere. Good that you value such a nice thing from your Dad.

Wow! That's a nice Marlin, especially that you're dad gifted it to you. Those are the ones that are extra sentimental! I love those older Marlins like that, I have a '57 model that is the twin to yours, but need to replace the scope, and I was thinking about putting a sling on it, but I don't want to drill the stock!

So close to my favorite load! I love the 31141 and load it over 25.2 grains of 4895 and have for years. I also shoot that bullet in my old 03 and in a 300 BO AR.

Just saw the pics, wow! I have one of the old brass trigger 357's and just love it. Would love to find a matching 30/30 for it.
