A long time ago I snagged an extra lefthand flinter barrel for my Great Plains.
Not real sure exactly why doing that seemed like a good idea but it did at the time.
Any how, it's a fifty round ball barrel and could be rebored to a pretty fine minie barrel or paper patcher.
Or relined to be a squirrel gun.
Any yall put a squirreler barrel on a GPR? How'd it work out?

I guess by squirrel rifle you mean .40 or smaller? That would make a pretty heavy gun!,,,Ed

Longknife is right. If you swamped it out, you could lighten it some. It would be neat, though.

@ Good Cheer.
Buying things like that barrel keeps our minds working.
It opens up all kinds of opportunities, plus keeps Bob Hoyt Busy.

I started shooting matches in 84 with a .50 cal. cpr. 2 years later I got a hoyt .40 cal barrel 34" long put it on my gpr stock and used it for years. to me it balanced nice and held steady as a rock. I did not think it was too heavy at all.

By squirreler you could very well mean 28 ga. I intend to do that with my Lyman Deerstalker (and maybe with screw-in chokes since I can’t find anyone who jug chokes smaller gauges). It wouldn’t be all that heavy and could be loaded as hot as a 20 ga.

Wow. A squirreler and a large bore "smooth rifle"?

I just sent my .56 T/C SB which is basically a 28 Ga. to Bob Hoyt to be Bored to .61 cal. and rifled in a RB twist.
When I shot it as a .28 ga with Shot, it worked ok, but it was too heavy for any kind of Wing Shooting or Rabbits on the run.
But I guess it would work for Squirrels where you are aiming more.
Never got to try it for Turkey, but I bet it would have worked good for that too with #4 shot

Gonna used the Lee .600 blocks?

Yep, Got to order the new Lee mold in .600
The set up should do fine for my needs, and be way more accurate than the Smooth Bore ever was.

Hey LAGS,
How did the .61 work out?

The .61 shot good so far.
It grouped about 2.75" at both 25 and 50 yards with home made powder.
I am going to try it at 100 yards next week

I think I would be tempted to sell the flinter barrel and use the proceeds to fund the purchase of a 32 or 36 cal rifle.

Wish I could find a 32-36 cal rifle for the price of a barrel ,I have lots of barrels and no 32-36 cal guns/:bigsmyl2:

Anybody used TOTW barrel liners in 45 cal?

Good Cheer

No, I haven't.
Salivated a few times over the liners' listing from TJ's in Alexandria, KY.
My New Englander was set up with a .458 bore liner by Hoyt.

Just this morning over coffee was looking things over and thinking about selling the .50 GPR barrel.
What I really want right now is a rifle to shoot the Lyman 386177 (for a minie), the NEI 388-198 SWC PB (for a maxi) and .380 round ball. But then I'd probably have to have a companion revolver.

Of course it would need a companion revolver!

Good Cheer, why not line your 50 cal barrel back to a 38-55 liner with a .380 bore. Or better yet ... a 40 cal liner for 40-65 Winchester. You should be able to run paper patch boolits in it with the faster twist rate. Might just develop a patched round ball load with a smidgen of powder for small game and close in targets.

Be a kinda heavy bugger but tall on cool and very unique to boot. Bench rested, the weight would be a none issue and with small hole nipples, it should be able to withstand plenty of pressure and develop a goodly amount of velocity for far away targets.

Should be pretty cheap to uncork the breech plug and gouge out the barrel, then install the liner and drill the flash hole , then re-breech it. Plus seems like a great fun project.

Wowww ... might just have talked myself into a project ... thanks for that!!!

Heh, I love flintlocks, and I love cast boolits both patched and lubed, and I love alternative fiction whether it's building models or reading "what-if" novels. The combination of things I'm fond of can give me some really fun muzzleloader ideas. Like golly willikers what if percussion caps haven't been invented so soon, what would the sniper rifles have looked like?
Just one more thing to enjoy!

@ Bigted
Be careful what you wish for.
I retired in February, and haven't had the time to start on one of my projects.
Just too many things going on with the life change.
Told my wife, I need to go find another job, because I need the time off.
But these threads of what others are working on, inspires me to change what I intend to do with the projects I have on the drawing board already

Got a replacement L&R to put on the .52 fast twist flinter Renegade.
'Fraid there's no way I can do it justice at a hundred without a scope but can't quite bring myself to do that (yet).
Will put a TC tang peep and bead front on it and see how things work out.

Another use for extra barrel, I have one that is cut down shorter for a "carbine" hunter. I can't remember the length, but it is a 54 cal slow twist, and makes a handy rifle. Dan
