I want to begin casting fro the 50-70 gvt. I have the lee 450 grain load and plan to use smokeless powder (unique) with a MV in the range of 1000-1200 fps. What kind of hardness am I looking for in an alloy-will straight wheel weights work? Thanks for the help.

That boolit is very accurate for me. In fact it outshoots several other moulds costing much more. Air cooled WW's is likely all you need. That is all I have ever used, and my approx. 1,000 FPS. velocities were achieved in a 6-1/2" Contender barrel.

Straight air cooled ww are adequate. As long as you stay around 1000-1600fps you may even be able to go as soft as half ww and half lead. Although, with a boolit as big as a .50" you don't really need expansion!

For the velocity range given, you can go as soft as 30-1 lead/tin with no problem unless your particular barrel just doesn't like it.
