I have had a 30 herrett contender 10 inch barrel for a bit and wanted to share this load.:-D

It is a Lyman 311359 with air cooled range scrap, checked and lube with 50/50. Sized .3085, I need to get a 309 die. 3 grains of Clays with NO filler at all. Federal standard large rifle primers. It will group like this at 25 yards, actually at little better as the fliers where mine. Fifty yards will open it up to maybe 1.5 inches with the same POI as the 25 yards setting. 100 yards is literally 12 inches low but still groups in 3 inches.

Velocity is unknown. It is an older 6 groove ten inch with a 2 power Bushnell Trophy, so I think this load has a bit more potential but I need a little more scope for my eyes.

Anybody have a program that could dope the velocity if it is on at twenty five and fifty then 12 inches low at a hundred?

That will ruin a rabbits day.

I shoot cotton tails with my dads old bolt action 32-20, with a 154gr flat nose going about 850fps pushed by trailboss. I never have a problem killing rabbits at close range with it and its quiet. The neighbors dont know it goes out the bedroom window sometimes to shoot rabbits and pest at night.

38-150 keith at 750 fps works awesome:mrgreen:

In southern New Mexico where I hunt deer there are some really nice sized cottontails. now shootin' them with my 30-06 and a 165grn "J"word will work but loud and wasteful.....so....I loaded some 311359s with 12 grns of 2400 (my m-1 carbine load, the measure was already set) and went to the range for a test. 50yard POI was 1 inch high with no change in the scope. Just goes POP and supper is in the bag. Now go buy something at the store that will do that..........Reloading is about something more than saving money. Custom accuracy loads tailored to YOUR gun plus the "special" bunny ammo that is cheaper than 22 mag and a great deal more power with less noise. Dead is dead, and those bunnys are tastey baked with rice and mushroom soup.... :Fire:

I've been taking a bunch of bunnies this season with my .410 Contender.

Quick Load

You should be getting about 850 fps with under 9,000 CUP or PSI either way not an issue.

As a nosey test, can you try it with Large pistol primers?

311359 is a fine bunny bullet if headshots are used. I have used it on lots of rabbits (hares, brush and jacks) at 1050 fps and head shots are deadly but body (heart lung), while deadly, are not quick killers. I lost several down holes before I quit taking body shots with that bullet. That load should also be a great grouse killer. It slips through them without a lot of damage. BTW; for those who don't know a body shot with a bullet like that on a bird kills them real quick but not on mammals.

I'd also suggest you try the Hornady 90 gr swaged lead SWC over about 2.5-3 gr of Bullseye (the Clays may work also). Probably be 900-1000 fps out of your .30 Herret. These are also deadly on rabbits. I shoot lots of them out of my 30-30. You might have to size them .309-.311 though. No relube is necessary after sizing. The Lee TL314-90-SWC duplicates that bullet.

This looks like perfect territory for the soup-can or the Lee C309-113f.

Besides, I bet one could beef up the loading in the Herrett and plug a deer with nice shot through the ribs!
