 I`m just getting into loading cast rifle boolits. My problem is lack of load data for the Lee 338 220 gr. boolit in a .338 Win. Mag. or a .338/06 A-Square. Anybody have any load advice?

Check Accurate Arms for data using their XMP 5744. Here's what they told me when I was looking for high velocity data with a 225 gr boolit.

Question: Could you suggest a min/max for my cast lead 225 gr FNGC bullet using XMP5744. Also would any of your other propellents be suitable if the desired velocity was in the 2,000 to 2,500 fps range?

Caliber: 338 Winchester Mag
Propellant: XMR5744
Grain: 225 gr
Bullet type: Lead FNGC
Make: Thompson Center
Model: Encore
Barrel Length: 26

Bruce,

We suggest between 35 and 45grains.

I've found excellent accuracy points at 36, 38, and 42 grains of 5744 when combined with a CCI 250 Primer. I use 50/50 WW-Pb oven heat treated for a hardness of 22 Bhn. Don't assume that since this is the same hardness as Lino, that it's the same. Vastly different in accuracy. Same goes for HTWW's that are harder. Lube is LBT Blue.

I cast the Lee .338 from linotype, size .339". These weigh 190 gr. ready to load. I back it with 40 gr. of IMR 4198 in WW .338 Win. magnum brass, CCI 200 primer. These chronograph 2350 fps in my Ruger M77 and average 2" to 3" groups at 100 yards. All disclaimers apply.

:-DI`ve been pouring lead for quite a few years. As a plumber and a shooter. I can`t even begin to think how many thousand .38 wadcutters I`ve made and shot in PPC events. I appreciate the help on the .338 loads, thanks. My favorite "little" gun is my namesake a .416 Taylor stuffed with hardcast 350 gr. RCBS boolits over 45 gr. of 3031 and WLR primers in W/W brass. This equals a 5 shot "Irish" clover leaf at 100 yds.

at 39.0 grains is a small one holer (5 shots) in my model 70 at 50 yards. I seem to remember 1748 fps. The old Hornady 33 Winchester flat point shot as well and to the same POI.

Wish I could get the RCBS with meplat to do that.

I have not worked a lot with this boolit, but it has not proven to be as accurate as the 220 Lee so far. More load work-ups are needed. Currently I have a hunting accurate load using the RCBS 200 gr. FP with a powder that is no longer available and lit with WLP.

WW Cases
WLR Primer
C338-220 Hornady GC 50/50 lube

I went back and dug out the chrono sheets, I was way off on velocity.
34 - 39.0 IMR 3031 (1625 - 1925 fps)
Alloy ?? Heck I go by hardness, no idea of content, mostly WWs
200 grain Hornady 33 Winchester FP bullet 39.0 3031 1870 fps

Louis, what sort of problems are you having with the 338 RCBS boolit? I have been thinking of finding 1, but am curious now. What is the rest of your recipe you posted above, case, primer, lube, alloy? Thanks for the posting.:coffeecom
