I want to load some light to moderate loads in 45-70 for a marlin 1895. Probably will use unique & a lee 340 gr bullet. The question I have is, will magnum primers cause any problems? I've got a whole brick & would like to use them up. The loads will be under 1500fps. Hope this was the right place to ask this question. Thanks in advance.

I use magnum primers in a lot of different loads. I don't use them for max loads if they aren't called for. If you're starting somewhere in the middle or below, there shouldn't be any problem using them.

They'll work for what you want to do.

Hope this helps.

No problem with magnum primers and that load.

Sometimes magnum primers improve the uniformity of light loads in large cases, should cause no problems and might help accuracy.

I use 15 grs of Unique with a 350 gr HP I cast, and it shoots great, about 1500fps, and low recoil!

The lee 340 will be undersize in your bore. I use it powder coated to bring dia up to size and load it over 13 gr of unique.

Unless you use Trail Boss (the best choice) be sure you add a filler. I use an over powder wad and coarse cuban corn meal .
Smells good and reduces fouling. Dacron is easier.

According to my 1967 Lyman reloading manual, a factory equivalent load is 38.5 grains IMR 3031 and a 400 grain cast bullet. My rifle groups them exactly with OTC Remington Core-Lokt ammo. It's very much a moderate load, since the max published powder charge is 50 grains of that powder.
