Looking for a good basic casting a reloading book.

At one point, I had a DVD that detailed the basics of casting and reloading, but can no longer find it.

My daughter, 16, cast her first bullets last weekend and loved it. She has watched me for years, but I am not sure my habits are the best after 30+ years. She is at the point now that she is very excited to learn the process from casting all the way to loading! I want to make sure she has a good foundation to work from, this kid and others like her are our future... if the art is to survive another couple of generations.

So, What book would you all recommend?

I happen to have (if i can find them) a set of DVDs i got from Brassmagnet that teach you bullet casting. Quite possibly the same dvds you used to have... if you PM me your address and if i can find them i will send them on their way to you.

Lyman#4 Cast Bullet Handbook.

Best choice ever.

I use Lyman #3 as my main reference. It contains some older mold and caliber data #4 has left out. I remember when #4 came out, there were more than a few people on this board who were not exactly happy with it, myself included. But #4 does have the newer powders listed. Having both, along with Glen Fryxell's book is the ideal situation.

I have cast #3, #4 and the lyman 48 and 49. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

I'd vote for Fryxell's book on casting. Covers almost everything you want to know, especially for a beginning caster. I cast a lot between the ages of 16 to 24, then got out of it. Was taught by older guys who had been doing it for decades. When I decided to get back in it, I found Glen Fryxell's book here and read it. Went back over some areas a few times just to get a better understanding. I have several of the Lyman and they are great sources of reference. My oldest and dearest is a dog eared reloading manual I got when I was 15 yoa, around 1963. The front cover is missing and all the index tabs are illegible because of use. Its still my goto book for loads. Fryxell's book is in PDF--I have a copy on my computer for reference. Interesting stuff.

I have all 4 lyman cast bullet manuals, no 1 and no 3 are the best
No 1 is available from Cornell publishing .
The Glen Fryxeii book is also a great resource

Again, thanks! I have already provided her the dl of the Fryxell book and she will start on it as homework allows. She is excited to start, I told her about the historical section and that really tripped her trigger. The good part is she and I spend time in the reloading room together and she will ask questions and discuss what she reads with me. This weekend she will be casting some 300 BO and 38 Special bullets. It will be a slow process, but a good one.

I have the Lyman #3 and #4 here prefer the #3 for the information and its lay out, it just seems to be more inline and flows well thru the information. SOme other more specialized would be Paul Matthews books and Mike Venturinos. SPGS manual has a small casting section but loads are all black powder. Some of the NRA manuals had good sections in them and other "how to" information if they can be found

Thanks, saw the inbound USPS text and thought that might be it. She and I are taking a 3 day weekend together for time in the casting and loading room, bet she gets some watched this weekend!

I had this set as well and found it great for beginners but it did not do much for me, at that time I had already been casting for 20 years. I think at some point I had either passed my set on here or to a local person that was trying to learn. Will do the same again, once the kid is done with them.

I had learn off of the Lyman 3 and have the 4th .and did get the reprint of 1 and 2 .The 3rd one is more on this for how I see it.

RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1 is available in print and I think a free pdf version can be had.

The RCBS manual , Lyman #4 and Lyman #3 are my main cast boolit books.
